Great central Road info requiered please

Hi guys I have just bought another OKA from OKA Coolgardie, I will fly down there next week to pick it up.

I am wondering what is the quickest way back to Jabiru, Do you need a permit for the Great central road??, I don't think going to Broome and across will be possible. Any ideas will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Steve.

G'day Top End Explorer, you will need 2 permits for the GCR one for WA side and one for NT side, info is in Permits section of EO, very easy to apply online and they email them to you. Have a good run, cheers, Kanga1.

We went through the road on 24-26 Jan and although we had 2 blowouts, the road was in excellent condition.
The only mildly rough section was from Giles to Docker River.

Hi Pilbara Echo,
Just for curiosity, do you know how you had the 2 blow outs? Was it speed and tyre pressure related? We have travelled it a good number of times and the first thing that I do is drop the tyre pressure to 24psi and have never (touch wood) had any tyre trouble on the GCR. Like you mention, the area around Warakurna is usually the worst.

Cheers

Hi Stephen,

I think it was a combination of things:
We purchased the vehicle in Melbourne only a few days before the trip, and I would really like to have bought some decent tyres before we left, especially considering we live in the Pilbara!.

The tyre that blew already had a small leak prior to getting to the GCR.
The other was caused by a puncture around Warakurna.

Speed - on about 70-80km/h max
Pressure - about 38psi.

So I suppose next time we make sure we take good rubber, as we've learnt our lesson!
