yet another ? for battery gurus (sorry)!

Would a battery that has apparently reached the end of it's effective lifespan have a negative impact on powering an amp hungry 3way fridge WHILST THE ENGINE IS RUNNING ?

Battery reads 12.5v (cold) with both multimeter and solar reg but reg indicates only 30% soc. Even after several hours recharging with ctec 15amp charger and all light displays have gone out when tested wth solar reg soc stll only indicates 70% charge so i'm guessing it's time for a replacement.
Would a battery in this condition impact on the performance of the fridge while the engine is running, would the alternator be pushing out enough power to run the fridge effectively?

Absolutely,

Has your Ctek got the recondition function in it?

If so use it and let it run through the cycle, it may take a while.

Sorry the absolutely refers to the last question, your alternator will definitely have enough to power your fridge

Wicket.

You may need to reset the SOC.

Unfortunately it's not just a question of replacing the battery but of eliminating possible causes of the real problem which is the sudden change of the fridge operation.
Have had the fridge for a number of years and never had any dramas till coming home from a recent trip when ambient temp was 24 and fridge was 16! Took it to the local dometic agent and they could find nothing wrong after a couple of days of testing. I figured the problem then had to be at the vehicle end and so checked all cables and joins and everything seems ok, voltage at fridge reads 11.8v ( realize there is some voltage drop but not drastic enough to effect the fridge dramatically) when running which seems ok, so the only thing that remains i guess is the battery but if the poor condition of the battery has no bearing on fridge operation whilst the car is running then replacing the battery won't solve the head scratching issue of why the fridge is misbehaving.
So does anyone have any suggestions?
thanks

I would be concerned that you have only got 11.8v at the fridge end.

Assuming that you have 13v when engine running.

Did you measure the volts at the fridge end with car running, and fridge on???

To measure real voltage drop you need to have your planned loads on and measure when there on, as it will give you a better idea of real voltage drop.

There may be a part of your system that when under no load shows an acceptable drop, but once you put it under load, fails badly.

Let us know.

Yes the voltage was measured at fridge with car running and fridge on max setting.
Unfortunately when I did this I had to use an extension lead as i could not get the car close enough without it so this might account for a small amount of voltage drop as the lead was 6mm2 and 3 metres long.

Hello all,
First time on..... I have a Hilux with a 90ah Powercrank deep cycle battery that is charged via a solenoid seperate to the vehicle battery. This battery is now too old (like me !!!) and I am replacing with an Optima Yellow.
I run 2 Engel 32 ltr fridges ( one on fridge and one on freezer) plus three rechargeable camp lights and until now only went out for a couple of days at a time. With a planned trip along the coast from Esperance planned for the end of the month for about 4 weeks, I have purchased a 150 watt solar panel kit. This should keep the charge up.............. I hope......

So...wicket..... fit a new battery, and if the funds are there... Go for a good Optima.

I am open for any sugestions from the members if I should encounter any problems with keeping up battery charge

Mainey

I asked a local auto lecky here in Kalgoorlie, and he sugested the Optima over a normal deep cycle.
Please tell me if I am wasting the dollars, as the Powercrank was 5 years old.

bet he had some 'just come into stock' too ???

Your replacing a Deep Cycle battery, so check out the *ah capacity* per $$

They have *fantastic CCA ratings* but extremely low ah ratings, they are possibly the best CRANKING battery available

Mainey,

Dont get me wrong........ The sparkie is one of my sub contractors..... I work for a truck repair firm that can purchase wholesale and probably sell to him.

If you can advise a deep cycle instead of the expense of an Optimum yellow.... please do.

I might even buy you a beer with the savings..... LOL

"but (SOLAR) *reg* indicates only 30% soc.
Even after several hours recharging with ctec 15amp charger........
when tested wth *solar reg* soc stll only indicates 70% charge "

How can SOC increase on Solar regulator display, when battery is charged externally by Ctec?

i checked it first with the solar reg then charged it with the ctec then checked soc with solar reg after ctec charge as ctec doesn't give any figures.

buy none of this explains why the fridge is not performong as usual given the service agents gave it the ok
