$ sign on Satellite Setup

I am setting up a satellite dish with a Strong Box and keep getting a $ sign on most channels. Can anyone explain what this means? The people from the shop who sold it to me are not helpful at all (even painful and rude).

If you live in WA you have to pay for Imparja, we only get GWN, WIN, ABC and SBS.

oh thats a new one to me,,,, have you been authorised to use Imparja and do you have a genuine card OR an imitation ????

you should get EXPO, Al Jazeera, INFO and others free but you need to contact Imparja and 7 Central (southern cross I think) for QLD, NSW and SA etc

and if in WA you will not be granted access to Imparja at ALL but have GWN and Win (I think right abbreviations)

don't have mine on just now

we had to move caravan last night due to flooding in NSW and just geteting organised again

I have no idea what the dollar sign would be, never seen it and have had satellite TV for many years. Have you got the Optus card in your Strong box? Has the Strong box been set to the correct satellite (C1) and set to the correct frequency? If so when on the correct satellite (Optus C1) you should get at least the Optus Aurora channel that emits a high pitched whistle usually on channel one on the STB. Your Optus card also needs to be switched on and this is done by ringing Optus on 1300301680 but the dish must be aligned first. Lack of support from the shop you bought it from does not surprise me, we all seem to be getting used to poor service these days.

$ sign is on about 90 channels now offered on C1 satellite by Optus

we are sick of seeing them, but I tried to delete them a couple of months ago

DON"T TRY IT AS ALL CHANNELS ARE DLETED NOT JUST THE ONES YOU SELECT TO BE DELETED

lickily we bought for a reliable supplier in QLD (no connection so if you want the name let me know) who checks if you purchased from him and he supplies 1st class support.

sent me files to fix our problem that we created be me

excellant service

Youe not very forthcoming with specific information.

Which sattelite are you trying to connect with?

Is it C band or K band?

Do you have a 'smart card' to install into the box to authorise reception?

The $ signs usually indicate an encrypted channel. i.e. unless you have the correct 'smart card' or other authorisation you cannot view it/them.

If you want to view ALL of ABC and SBS Australia wide including their secondary digital channels (NOT HDD) then tune into the D1 Sattelite at 160 degrees (just past C1 - which by the way is the most ppowerful signal in that area of sky) all these channels are free to view you don't need a card or authorisation.

You could also try choosing ONLY FTA (free to air) when you scan (if your receiver has that option) and that should preclude those channels with the $ sign.

Having said all that some receivers will still show the $ sign even though you are authorised to watch that particular channel/frequency (this happens on my Dreamax DT470 when watching from C1 using a 'smart card'). Sometimes when you are confronted with the $ sign and it is NOT a channel requiring a 'smart card' if you wait 15 - 30 - 60 seconds or so, often the channel will come into view. Happens mostly on 'K' band amongst the many Asian channels available free to air.

Also, when you insert the 'smart card' into your box it can sometimes take from say 5 minutes to a couple of hours for it to be recognised by the service provider and you can actually view channels - even with the $ sign showing.

Good luck.

A bit more info.
3 years ago I bought the strong box and got permission from Imparja to set it up for future/planned trips out of WA. They sent me a 'spike' to get it going. It never worked and I gave up.
I recently decided to give it another go. It turned out that the Card Reader was stuffed (may have been stuffed all along $60 to fix). It is now fixed and the shop reset my Strong box channels for $40.
I have a proper Optus Card. Excuse me if I don't use the correct words as I am just learning and my son-in-law is trying to sort it out for me. I think I am trying to get the C1 satellite. The shop now says I need a tuner because otherwise it is almost impossible to set our dish (though we tried to copy my Foxtel dish settings). We get Al Jazeera but not WIN, GWN, Imparja etc.
I wanted to sort this out 'from home' before going on trips, either for local WA channels or Imparja etc.
After we try the tuner, there are contractors that I can pay to come and help me setup.
Help!?!?!?

Rob

if you get Al Jazerra scroll up to channel 1 the set up channel and it will say if Sat is Optus C1

if it is ring Optus and give them your card number off the back of the card.

During this time you need to leave the strong ON and C1 tuned in. It takes up to 2 hours to activate ABC, SBS ect.

we had to do it again last Dec due to my stuff up as mentioned above.

Hi Rob. Contact Jamie at Access Antennas & Satellites in Osborne Park. 08 9446 4433. He did supply my system and was extremely helpful - he knows his stuff.
If you are using Foxtel AND Optus in your van, you are going to need a double LAN on your dish - it's too technical to explain here, but Jamie can supply the Sat finder, and instal what is necessary to get you happening. I have no interest in the company - just had good service

cheers

A dual LNB might work better.

Sounds like you bought it from a dodgy shop.

I have a Strong box and a 790mm dish and by using the satfinder and compass Supplied by the seller it usually takes about 5 mins to set up anywhere.

I also got an inclinemeter for the correct vertical angle and a booklet with a lot of the settings for popular places all over Aussie.

A Sat finder is essential.

Also included was a DVD to show you how to get it all going..

What did you get.

I have now dealt with 2 shops (the leading experts in Perth??) and both have just said 'It is easy' and provided nothing - no paperwork, no DVD, and 'no advice' - it was actually a strain for them to talk to me and when they did talk (mumble) I had no real idea what they meant, even when I persisted with them.

The one yesterday even said 'It's not my problem if you don't know what you're doing' to my son-in-law who is very good at this stuff. I said to the last guy 'I expect this won't work again, and are you sure that I just connect everything up and just use the remote control' - to which he said 'yes, that's all you do'. Now he says we need the tuner - It's a 30 min drive there each way each time that I have to go back.

G`day Graham,

"A Sat finder is essential"

Graham I have a sat finder meter and I seldom use it. I find it is only a gadget that does exactly the same function as the TV set.
The TV lets you know when you have the dish set to the correct position.
Have the volume on the TV turned up while adjusting the dish and when the dish receives the sat signal, BINGO you`ve got it. Much easier and no fiddling with leads and connections.
A sat finder sometimes lets you know when the dish is set to some other satellite that is not the one you need.

Just my two cents worth, :>)

Regards

Scrubby

Each to his own I prefer to be a bit more considerate of my neighbours than having a TV screaming if the dish is not close to the van as we have had to have it in some places.

Like 20 m away in 80mile beach.

Also have seen some sets that havent actually got the Optus tuning channel after very knowledeable (HA HA) users have changed things so much only they can follow it.

.It is a handy thing for inexperienced users.

Cheers

Hi George
I'm in Beechboro. We finally found out this arvo that the Ku-Band Single LNBF SRT L801 unit was a dud, after my son-in-law tried all sorts of things. They replaced it with anew one.

We have also finally picked up Optus C1 Ku satellite, the channels we can get are ABC and SBS. It turned out that the angle that the shop was telling us was way to high. We finally have full signal strength. My son-in-law is coming over to muck around with it tomorrow.

We are stabbing in the dark George and would really appreciate some help.

If you can only get SBS and ABC it is likely your Optus card is not activated and so you wont get WIN and GWn until it is.

There is a website that gives you the angles etc for all of Australia .

I dont use it so google and ye shall find
