Yes, Alan, you don't normally associate salt lakes with central Qld. Access to the eastern side, where I took the photo, is from the road shown in the GE image. I assume the lake is mostly/entirely on station properties.
As you can see, the surrounding country is quite flat, so there's no dramatic scenery around, just a large expanse of lake (nearly full when we were there). It didn't look to be very deep, and the article above confirms that. You'd get very muddy trying to put a boat in.
One mystery to me is that nearer to the waterline, the shore was covered with a thick mat of whitish, hair-like fibres - animal, vegetable or mineral? Maybe someone on here knows.
