Canning Stock Route

Hi all you travellers. Have any of you travelled the Canning Stock Route this season (2010), and could give me an update on track and water availability for the "lower" part of the C.S.R.? I am leaving for the stock route this Friday the 16th April and any info would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

There is a fair amount of surface water up to about well 5 but it does affect driving conditions as the ground is hard in those areas. As I said in the forum the corrugations were a lot worst than I remembered in the Southern areas, one part in particular they were very bad (deep and long). You just have to take it easy.

We had a huge downpour when we reached Durba Springs (which just made the place more special) and we pondered if it would cause a problem getting out, but it drained away by the next day.

The track in general is in an excellent condition with no major issues, Savory Creek was dry enough to drive over with out detour and the claypans were firm although care needs to be taken avoiding previous bogging places.

The dunes were easy enough to traverse all through the route and not cut up but we encountered a group with a trailer going from 33 to 23 so these ones may be a bit more churned now.

A bushfire has been through the northern part of the track and there is a lot of stakes, across the track. We moved a fair amount but beware of tyre damage.

A magnificent track and the scenery is beautiful, my only concern was the amount of rubbish we found scattered by people who don't appreciate it. We ran out of space picking up beer bottles and other bits and pieces that were tossed onto the track itself.

Have a ball email me if you want any other info.

ps fuel at 33 $3.20 litre

Hi Oggie, we'll be going onto the southern section in July to the W23 dump after the Wiluna gig.

What was the overall condition of the vegetation out there - was it looking good after the rains that were supposed to have got out that way or was the rain mainly in the north, from appearances pls?

Cheers.

The south must have got a fair amount due to the surface water about Windich Springs had plenty of water in it. The vegetation was very green and lush in most areas.

Hi Oggie,
Thank you for the information, we are only travelling from Well 5 thru to 23. You said that it rained at Durba Springs (was there any water and if so was it usable, for showers only)? Also the water at Well 6 / 12/ 15 and Georgia Bore (pump) was okay?? Many thanks.

The only water we took up to drink in the southern section was from Well 12 it was absolutely clear as a bell. 6, 15 and Georgia Bore were all ok but we didnt need to take water from these wells.(we carried 250litres between us).

I have attached a piccy from Well 5 (a bit peaty looking but tasted ok)
Durba Springs had frogs and tadpoles in it and we tasted it again so it must be ok as well.
