Straight line the hilux will kill it but low down idle pulling the big 6 would kill the lux. (I've had both)

When you put your foot down on the throttle of the std cruiser especially when towing,,, not much thrusting power is available,,, it is just a forward feeling of slight acceleration,, unless you are going uphill and then it is a slowing down sort of feeling.....................

The cruiser has heaps more pulling power, but weighs about a ton more, so it comes out even, either way, they are no speed machine.

Now I have had a re-read of your post, the D4D will eat a 1HZ in every aspect, except for simplicity and reliability, both if which come in REAL handy when trying to overtake a roadtrain LOL

The hilux has more, while the cruiser are a great motor and virtually trouble free the hilux would outpull it for sure, my mate has the 100 series non turbo and said its a great vehicle but said a turbo would make a huge difference for towing, he said will sit on 100k all day on the flats while towing but when it comes to the hills his mate (I dont know him) out pulls hims on the hills in his dual cab lux (d4d) with roughly the same load on the back (camper trailer). After having my current vehicle I would never buy a non turbo again (just my opinion) for every day driving its good to have that extra get up and go, and be able to keep up with the traffic without any problems, but like any vehicle my prado would also slow up on the hills with a decent load behind it so depends on the weight you are going to be towing and if its a daily driver, all just my opinion and my mate with the cruiser. The old saying "you cant beat cubic inches" comes to mind , less revs = less wear and tear = longer life.

Hilux will beat it hands down. Just look at the torque and power figures. After owning and towing with a standard 4.2 Cruiser and also a 1KZ 3 litre Prado, the Cruiser would battle to keep up with Prado, never mind the D4D Hilux.

Cruiser battled towing a dinghy in sand, yet Prado would tow a larger baot with less effort.

Also my Prado and my current BT 50 does less revs at 120km/h then what my Cruiser did at 110km/h, so therefore how does less revs = less wear and tear= longer life come into play now.

thanks guys..had the cruiser for 2 years now...been around aus once..towing 18 foot pop top regal ,it has all the gear inc. a/c...on fraser island ..wouldn,t swap for anything on there..toured the entire island..with a tent of course..never got stuck once...went from fraser to qld east coast...into narrabri..to canberra..would have swapped it for everything that passed me on those hills...went to melbourne via the coast to avoid clyde mountain..now in kalgoorlie on the way to broome...and thinking about the hilux for fuel economy..the cruiser averages 20 litres per 100k,s 90 kph

Probably better to compare the hdfte turbo cruisers 160kw/430nm with the lux...after all its closer to a comparison to the 1hz mechanical motor from the 90's ....if you like your old girl, one of these motors will fit straight in where the 1hz is.... about 8k for the motor and another few to wire it up

"you cant beat cubic inches" Very true Alloy, my old man use to say that all the time, I doubt the current turbo vehicles like my prado (older motor) will see 500,000k without some form of mechanical issues motor wise, eg turbo, head, seals etc where as the 1HZ will do more and upwards and over the 1 mill mark as I have seen but in saying that I would prefer to do 300/400k (maybe ??) and have the extra go and be more comfortable power on tap when needed. While the old lux was 2.8d and was reliable as ever I certainly dont miss hanging in the left lane and getting over taken by loaded B doubles while climbing Mt Vic LOL but sold her with 300k on it and till this day still going strong, only time will tell how all these new things will go, and wether they go the distance. The way I change my vehicles I wont have my'n for 300k anyway hence the wife gets bleep ed off when we keep changing, new suspension, snorkel etc lol Regards Steve M

Good point Dozer !! I was looking the other day just surfing carsguide, WOW how much they still want for a 100 series with the factory turbo motor but a bloody brilliant vehicle, I would have one if the funds allowed it LOL. Regards Steve M

Dozer-the 1HD-FTE is certainly an outstanding engine, but where can you get them by themselves from? Ive heard they are imported from japan but havent been able to find any?

this guy has found out that the motor wont run without the original key/ignition transponder for the computer....aftermarket or ute computer will get it going.
