Hi all,

Been seeing some problems developing in my hilux. I'm looking for the collective wisdom to see if there is a simple solution or if I am looking at new engine time... If it is new engine time, what are the options and the costs???

***The engine blows grey/black smoke. It started only under load but now there is a bit of smoke all the time and heaps under load.

***There is a rattle/tapping noise coming from the motor when it is under load. The sound is only there when accelerating or under load, even cruising at 110km/h it disappears.

***There is a persistent oil leak at the rear of the engine and around the oil filter (no the filter is not loose). There is also oil weeping from the seal around the rocker cover.

***If I remove the oil filler cap when the motor is running, a fine mist of oil spatters out almost in time with the engine speed.

The fuel pump was reconditioned and the glowplugs and injectors replaced at West End Diesel about 2 or 3 years ago. The injectors were replaced earlier this year (DIY) (When they were replaced the tips were covered in soot which rubbed off easily).

The engine still has good power (for a 2.8 hilux) on roads and motorways. It also has no problems offroad (high and low range work)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

before you recondition your engine, have a look at the simple things.

****Black/gray smoke-change your air filter. Clean out the intake manifold/pipes etc.

****Rattling/tapping-check your exhaust manifold gasket. Drop the oil into a clean white container and let it settle before carefully draining off and look whats in the bottom.

****Oil leaks-clean and degrease, dry and then take it for a spin. Look closely to see where it originates from. Tappet cover gasket is about 15 minutes to replace.

****Every Toyota diesel of that era has heaps of blowby-probably in a reco one also.

Alternatively pay someone else lots of money to do these things.

Mike,
If you haven't done it already give the engine a treatment of CEM flushing concentrate. It will remove all the built up soot and crud from inside and you will be surprised how much comes out.
It is not "cheap" stuff at about $100 a bottle but after the first treatment you only use a little to maintain a clean engine. I swear by it and use it every oil change. The exhaust smoke is much improved. I have no connection with them, just a happy customer.
I also put 2 stroke oil (for water cooled engines eg outboard motors) in the fuel at 200:1 and that has further reduced the exhaust soot and the engine at 218K is running better than ever.
Some will poo poo these two methods but just try them for yourself.
Good luck and please post your results.

Check your intake hose still has the spring inside it as the intake rubber hose may be colapsing under load.
Oil leak at rear of engine could be oil running down from rocker cover leak but more likely to be the rear main seal, simple to fix but a big job to get at.Either engine or g/box has to come out.Rocker cover leak could ba as simple as loose bolts, so try nipping them down.If not, you may need a new gasket, again an easy fix.The filter leak could be leaking from the filter itself, try a new filter.
The fine mist of oil sounds about normal out the filler cap.

What has been already mentioned is good advice.
Also check that your harmonic balancer nut is tight.
Bolt in the front pulley that screws into the crank.
Not uncommon to have them come loose, and damage the keyway on the crank.

Worth checking when you change the oil, I think its a 19mm going by memory for those of you with the 2.8.

If you dont have a snorkel fitted, check the air induction pipe between the air filter box, and the back of the headlight, have seen debrit clog this up before too.

Hope its just as simple as a blocked up filter, and a leaking exhaust gasket/ join.

Just about every 2.8 I have ever seen has blown smoke under heaver load. Getting it breathing better often helps(more air into engine)eg snorke, extractors and a free flowing exhaust will all help get more air into the cylinders.
If diesels start easy from cold then compression is usually ok.

How often are you changing the oil & filter ??? Major thing with the 2.8d. Have you had the tappets/shims checked ??? these also need checking as with wear they actually tighten them selves up. misty splatter, normal myn did it from day 1 to 300thou, rear leak if dripping beween the bellhousing and the engine is more then likely rear main, had mine done at 280k not hard if you have the tools and a hoist, forget trying to do it laying on your back its a killer. Black/grey smoke ?? possible as mentioned above check intake pipes, air filter, how many klms since the fuel filter was done ?? Could be the oil cooler that the filter is screwd to leaking around the seal not a big job either.. Is it actually chewing/using any oil ?? Mine did 300thou before I sold it & still going strong till this day, same motor, gearbox, one clutch but I was anal about oil & filter did it every 4k without fail, otherwise big end bearings WILL destroy themselves 3 and 4 mainly 4 due to lack of lubrication. I doubt very much your up for a rebuild unless you really neglect the oil & filter changes, I never used any type of flushing products in mine, if you change the oil and filter when required every 5 not 10k then there is no need...............Regards Steve M
