Hi there, on our way to Northern NSW and QLD coasts as of Monday next week. We are stopping over in Canberra for 3 days, and was wondering about some good, clean and sort of cheap accommodation. We are 2 adults and 2 young kids.

Any advice would be great..

Have a look at the Formule1 hotel on the northern edge of the city (see www.formule1.com.au). Room prices start around $80. From what I can see the rooms are tiny, and I don't know how they would handle a family of four, but they might be worth a call on 02 6253 9020.

I would suggest that you book ahead. Canberra can be full quite regularly. Try the Canberra Village caravan park. Fairly central and they have a substantial motel and heaps of cabins. But, check if they have any schools booked in at the time - a lot of schools use the place for their pilgrimage to Canberra. You don't want to share the place with them.

I would give the Formula 1 a miss, as you have a car a good option could be to stay in a motel or apartment in Queanbeyan (10 mins from Parliament House). Have a look on Wotif for good deals. As a local I haven't actually stayed in any so can't give too much advice on quality. If you look a bit further afield than City or Manuka you will pay much less. See Tripadvisor.com for reviews. Enjoy our beautiful city in Autumn! There is heaps to do, don't forget Questacon for young kids. They will love mini-Q if under 6.

You might also try Canberra Carotel Motel & Caravan Park Cnr Aspinall & Zelling St Watson 02 6241 1377. Not the flashest place from memory. Also, I would recommend you look at Queanbeyan as advised above if you are looking at cheaper accommodation.
