Advice on Plenty Highway

Opinions? on taking a 2004 Subaru Forester with off road camper trailer from Boulia to Alice after the Birdsville races early September this year. We will be taking it steady as we don't have any heroes in our family!! We will be self sufficient and will only need to top up on ULP about half/two thirds of the way. All advice would be appreciated and any latest knowledge of the road condition would be appreciated.
Geoff.

You should be fine. Along Plenty Hwy should be OK provided no unseasonal rains or roadworks where graded repairs / mounds require some clearance [rarely].Check local shire websites or Qld RAC website for road reports closer to departing.
Usually traffic along there Sept/Oct to help if any problems arise. Enjoy.

Hi to all who have helped me decide to go via the Plenty. Your replies are greatly appreciated and have put the little woman's mind at ease. I will be carrying 2 spares for each and extra fuel. After reading some of the info that is on OzExplor re the Plenty, I thought all would be OK if it was approached with some caution (as is my nature!!). We will be away for a few months so will more than likely ask more advice as we get more into the planning of tis trip.
Once again to you all, many thanks.

Provided that the creeks aren't flooded you shouldn't have any trouble. It's a longish stretch from Boulia to the first fuel, possibly further than a Forrester towing a trailer can reach so I would be carrying extra with a safety margin. It would also be handy to have an extra spare because that is the main problem I saw, tyres ripped to shreds.

Geoff, as already said, you should be able to handle it.
However, there are many loose and sharp stones on the road so you need to control your speed and keep a close watch on the road to avoid them.

Cheers

Geoff,

As others have said, provided there's been no recent rain (unlikely at that time) you shouldn't have any trouble with the Plenty. It will likely be corrugated, so you may benefit from dropping your tyre pressure, and consequently our speed. Be aware that fuel available at Jervois is on a cash only basis.

Have a great trip.

Hi,

I was out on the Plenty September last year. I got passed be a RAV 4 like I was stranding still. It was an NT Government car so it would be able to do things that a standard RAV 4 was never designed to do. But i digress.

As said before the leg after Boulia is a long stretch. Last September the Plenty was fairly rough in my opinion. Bad corrugations and a fair bit of bull dust - probably the aftermath of a fairly busy winter season. But as long as you take it easy and carry extra fuel you should be fine. Otherwise get your hands on an NT Government RAV 4 and you should be able to go as hard as you like.

All the best

Geoff

Thanks mate, I'll keep my eyes open for an ex NT Govt. RAV 4 if I run into any bother!!! Company vehicles are also listed under "miracle autos".
Cheers,
Geoff.
