Hi Doug
Been that way before, seems my memory might be starting to go, I have turned 40 you know. I just didn’t read the question properly. I thought Tony was after alternative routes to get here.
How many Km’s have you got on that Troopy now? I always think of your car and how old I’d have to be before I ran up as many Miles on mine. I have done 70k over 5 ½ years ?

Only 40....your a chicken ...lol, I'll be 67 next month and to some of the older boys I guess I'm a chicken too. Troopy is going OK , the rate the K's went on has dramatically slowed...like me, but I guess I put around 600,000+ over the 6 years leading up to 2008. Now I would be lucky to do 15,000 in 12 months.

Might be an idea to give Hell's Gate and the Burke shire a ring and check if the road is open yet. I know that as of last wednesday the road was still closed from Doomadgee to the NT border and the road from Burketown to Normanton is still closed.

Hells Gate will open if they can get fuel and food in.... but with the roads closed... it makes things a little difficult for them. There is little local trade for them, so it's all about the "tourists" in the travel season. If the road is open for less than 2 months, then it's not worth while employing someone for that period (even if they could get anyone). In which case they would have limited services available... no accomadation and probably only take away food.

Council is keeping the road closed as they are unable to service the road as it is so wet.

Your best bet is to call them (Council & Hells Gate) prior to departure and see where things are at.

Tony,

The Southern Lost City is just off the Roper Bar Road...between Lorella Springs (which is as someone else said, a great spot) and Butterfly Springs. You can spend a lot of time wandering around amongst all the strange shapes and there are tables and toilets but no camping allowed. Butterfly Springs is a nice campground a bit further along the track and there is a pretty pool and waterfall. The Western Lost City is a long way off the main road and you have to get the key for the gate from the ranger at the Nathan River Ranger Station. Its not a difficult track in, a couple of water crossings. Worth while though as you can drive around and wander through. No camping.

You can camp beside the Towns River and then further along Lomarieum Billabong is a lovely camp spot...beautiful billabong with waterlilies and fringed by paper barks. Crocs in the area though so be aware though we didn't see any. Roper Bar crossing is worth a look.

If you wanted somewhere really special then you could contact Sandra who runs the visits to Poppy's Pool. One group is allowed in per visit so you would have it all to yourself. It costs about $50 per adult per day/night but its amazing. You could get your camper in and walk the last bits to the pool and falls but we managed to get all the way to end of the gorge. There is a large pool, a couple of boats to get you across to the falls where there are pools and falls of warm & cold water. We had a day and a night there and it was lovely.

If you google Poppy's Pool you will get the contact numbers or contact Heartbreak Hotel at Cape Crawford and they should be able to put you onto the right track. You can also do helicopter tours of another Lost City from Cape Crawford...very spectacular flying in over the strange shaped rock formations..you land and walk around amongst them too.

Between Borroloola and Cape Crawford is Carabarini Cons Reserve a mini Lost City.

The road from the Queensland border to Borroloola and then the Roper Bar track was very corrugated for much of the way back in 2009. Like all outback tracks though, it just depends on when the grader has been through.

At Borroloola a drive up to Bing Bong and then to King Ash Bay is good. You could camp out at King Ash Bay but we camped at the caravan park in town, good shady sites, hot, hot showers and no problems.

Enjoy your trip,

Viv

Hi Viv
We have been down that way a few times but have never been or heard of Poppy's pool. Looks very nice but not sure if we would be game to swim there.
We like very small clear pools or the top of escarpments.

Cheers Lyndon
