Hi all
Am pretty happy with a 2004 Cub Supamatic that I have found with the TransContinental pack at a good price that will do us for the amount of time we get to go out camping.
My question is, will 15 inch wheels fit under ok, (hubs, guards currently 14's?) can the 5 leaf suspension be upgraded, or easily enough to give a tad more lift and strength, what is the difference re: chassis build/strength compared to onroad version, and what are the views of others that own the same camper setup, ie where have you taken it, what failures you have had,etc.
Apart from that, it is exactly the type of camper we have been looking for, except its the TransContinental Pack, not full offroad, hence the original questions.

We've had an off road Supamatic since we bought it new in 1988, it is basically a tent on wheels with no internal fitout apart from two single beds with storage underneath. no water tanks no 240v wiring, no kitchen etc.
As we had an earlier one (1978 cubomatic) I knew what the weaknesses were and reinforced it before use.
While it was sold as an off road version it still had 13" rims and only a 50mm square drawbar with standard eye to eye box trailer springs.
The biggest mod was changing the hitch from a ball to a pintle and ring coupling. I also made a truss for the drawbar, a piece of 50x75 RHS from front to the rear, fitted shock absorbers and installed a hatch in the LHF side corner to enable outside access to the under bed bin. The axle was also changed to a solid 40mm square one with Holden hubs and 14"wheels fitted with 8 ply LT radials.
It has now covered in excess of 250,000 k over most of Oz including most of the iconic tracks, deserts etc behind successive vehicles.
We've never had any problem with it in all those years and k's, it just tows along behind, sometimes with bikes on top, sometimes a boat on top but basically just carrying bedding and clothes for five. It has been rolled on its side twice in hard off road conditions, immersed in water crossings so that only the roof rack was showing, (didn't leak either, different story if we'd stopped ;-))) and is still going strong but now with only two adults as the kids have grown up and gone.
I would imagine that as yours is a recent model it will have a much heavier drawbar/chassis already, weigh more due to internal fitout etc. I would stick with the 14" wheels and fit LT radials, changing the suspension probably isn't required either, try it out as is and see how it goes.

Thanks for your reply Peter, I might leave it as is and see how it goes before making too many mods, but will definately change to a Treg hitch.

We have a 2007 Cub Supamatic Escape with Transcontinental pack. Which included the extended drawbar, heavier suspension and axle and wheels.

They are suited to all off road, with the exception of the Cape York.

Give Cub a ring and they will tell you the specs for that year.

We have the water tank, with lockable cap. Hot dipped galvanised frame, stainless steel kitchen and pantry (External). Have had other Cub supamatics before and this is better built. Ordered new and added what we wanted.

Have had campomatics, camper trailers, tandem camper trailers, caravans and poptops. More that satisfied with the Cub.

As only a visitor can't post any photos but if you drop a line to my email will send some of our setup to you. They are pretty adaptable and and fairly easy to setup. Does the one you are looking at have the winch to setup and foldup.

Also had boatrack, front outboard bracket and front boat trailer (Bulldog) also rod and pole carriers and large galv toolbox. Been good but will probably sell next year due to two knee replacements and fusion of bottom of spine.

Would recommend the type, same as anything depends on the use it has had and the condition. Which model is it the Regal or the Escape, what annex or fly with it etc will help you gauge, what you should pay.

Thanks Trev, it is the Regal, has annexe and end wall up front, yes it does have the winch setup, slide out external kitchen, no pantry, stone guard, lockable water filler cap, 60l water tank plus guard, small toolbox, rear door for access,3 way fridge opposite small cupboard and drawers, 240 volt & 12 volt power, and cover for when its stowed,good condition,got him down to $8,000, which I think is a great price after some research.

Sounds good, make sure you inspect all the canvas, including the annex.

Get him to show you how to setup when you pickup.

The small door at the back should be unsprung each time you setup.
