Next G access - Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks

Looking at the Telstra coverage maps, there appears to an area around the intersection of Strzelecki Track and Bonython road with a Telstra mobile tower.

The map shows full broadband and mobile access in the middle of nowhere.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I have an external Yagi antenna for the Next G broadband internet.

Believe it or not - Optus was the only one to provide coverage in and around Birdsville after Birdsville races last year.

Telstra pulled out there stuff , but Optus committed to having theres permanet , was strange borrowing the wife's phone to make a call , its also happened in the odd other place - we always carry sim cards for both now.

Going north NextG coverage is lost not to far from Copley, no Optus

If you go to Telstra coverage and type in 'Innamincka' it shows an area of coverage to the southwest. Maybe its an error.

Tony
No, not an error. That's the area around Santos. They couldn't operate these days without coverage.

You may also find that Moomba has "arranged" for coverage in their area of operations, makes it easy for them to meet OH&S regs and at little cost to themselves.
We found over in WA last year that many remote areas had coverage when within 50-60 k's of a minesite.
The trans road east from Kalgoorlie right across the continent also has coverage as there are towers the full distance due to National Rail having coverage for the rail line. Consequently there is fair coverage north and south of the line.
We also found a few remote Communities had coverage probably due to the Broadband guarantee. Both Balgo and Mulan had coverage.

Yep I noticed that a few years ago at the West Wyalong Mine site some 30km from West Wyalong. They had there own tower for coverage. I suspect that they would have everyone using it so maybe Telstra get the costs back if there are enough users & time on the phone.

Cheers

Tony, there is coverage in Birdsville township via Optus only. It was so successful following the Races Optus stayed on - Telstra gave us the flick!

After the Birdsville races I went to the Dig Tree, Telstra Tech's were there with a satellite dish running tests, so for that day we had Next G connection it was great.
No connection at Birdsville during the races days, only Optus.
