Hi all,
Sorry in advance if this question has been asked a million times before. Hubby and I are planning a trip from NSW to SA, NT and QLD next month. What I want to know is does anyone know the rules when it comes to taking fruit/vege interstate. From what I've read you can't take anything from NSW to SA, but can you take anything from SA into NT and from NT into QLD? If it means we have to buy fruit/vege in towns along the way then so be it, I just want to know the rules from anyone who's travelled through these states so we don't end up getting fined.
Thanks
Nic

Nic - it depends on where you enter SA from NSW - If your are travelling out through Cameron Corner down to Marree then up to NT you do not have have problems taking fruit with you. But if you are going out though Mildura or Broken Hill then you have problems. The fruit fly exclusion zone starts about Wagga in NSW

For more information on this subject best to google Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone and it will give you all the answers to your questions.

Hi AJ. Yes the Fruit Fly Exclusion Zone is relevant, but fruit fly is only one pest out of hundreds. The Quarantine Domestic website (I gave the internet address, another post gives the phone number for a hard copy of the same info) is needed to get the full picture. Anyone who only takes account of the Fruit Fly issues is setting themselves up to lose veges, onions, garlic, and a whole lot more at the borders.
Try entering WA from the East, and nuts, plants, honey etc also come onto the radar.

Hi Nicnpete

we have just crossed from NSW in Vic via Mildura we had no problems but remember about fruit fly around the riverina area no fruit allowed in.
When we left Vic into SA via Renmark where its a totally different story No fruit or veg allowed in, they even took the potatoes we bought in Mildura less than 200klm from the SA border. Eat everything before inspection station! they even search your car and van.
No problems SA into NT just no lettuce not that anyone there to check just an honesty bin

We nearly caused WW111 last year when the missus and I sat at the front of the Q`station near Renmark SA and ate the Bananas we had just bought at Mildura.
There was a female Guard in particular who I considered a little Power Drunk and her manner got my back up.
She had taken all the veg`s and fruit from the c/van and car and was extremely arrogant while doing it, so we decided to eat the Bananas.

They threatened to book me so I said "go ahead, on what charge ? "
I hadn`t entered SA with anything prohibited, and I couldn`t reverse away from the Check Point because of the line of vehicles behind me.
They ended up having to open a new lane of traffic while we sat there and ate our Bananas.
Most of the people behind us saw the funny side of it but the Border Guards were not very pleased.

Scrubby. You say "I hadn`t entered SA with anything prohibited", but surely the Yamba Quarantine Station is actually well inside SA (at least is is on my map in Camps Australia 4). And you state that the person in question "had taken all the veg`s and fruit from the c/van and car", as well as the fateful bananas!
So how did the fruit and veg get to Yamba without you entering SA with them on board?
Seems to me the woman was doing her job, and the problem was that you hadn't foreseen the fact of the quarantine checkpoint. As you state the facts, they probably could have charged you with breaching the quarantine rules and thrown the book at you. So perhaps you owe her a hug!

I rang Quarantine Domestic 1800 084 881 and they posted a booklet called Travellers guide to Australian Interstate Quarantine.

I have found this to have lots of very useful information. We are heading of to VIC, NSW, QLD, NT, SA then back to VIC in 10 more sleeps.

As suggested get all the info that is easily available and follow the rules - major industries are being protected.
Crossing the Nullarbor and some other long trips can be tricky distances between legal shops. We found that, if we overstocked on fruit and veg etc we stopped, well before the checkpoints and borders and cooked stuff up so we did not lose anything. Vegies peeled and lightly steamed and refrigerated are quite OK. Fruit can be peeled and stewed or juiced. Onions we chopped and lightly fried and kept in the fridge, garlic we peeled and kept in a jar of oil. Frozen vegies are also fine. We had plenty for a week's camping on the Nullarbor before we reached Norseman!
The inspectors are only doing their job and it is not fair for people to get stroppy with them because they did not follow the rules. We did see one stroppy lot being made to take their whole camper trailer apart for close inspection at the WA border! They had mountains of gear spread everywhere!Wait til WA secedes and has customs as well!

The best advice is get the book and read it thoroughly.

Then you wont get caught and if you do no one else to blame.

We worked our food to suit when we were approaching borders and made sure we had none.

The fines if you get caught simply arent worth it.

Some people moan that in WA you can buy the same stuff in the shops as back across the border.

A lot of it however is heat treated to kill greebies and while it looks the same it isnt.

Honey is one of them.

The check going west towards Kununurra is noted for its female Hitler,

so dont upset them they have all day to make you empty everything out.

We found be nice, say you have read the book and just open what they ask and you will be fine.

The guy at Kununurra said to open back of car, I said Ok but its only got tools etc.

Still had to open it, didnt have to open rear side door where fridge was. Oh well.
