I'm planning a trip out to
Birdsville in August and would like to leave the van there and then go out to
Poeppel Corner just with the Cruiser and tent for a couple of days.
I think I've got most things covered but I'm trying to justify taking the Waeco 50 on an eight week trip just to use for a few days. What alternatives work to keep a bit of meat, beer etc, cold out there?
John

Hi jdbb, for a couple of days about a 40 to 50 Lt esky with a block of ice would be sufficient at that time of year, unless you plan to take more than half a dozen beers a day.
Cheers

In August at night, you'll be looking at close to zero degrees.
In the past, I've taken an esky and left the lid off it at night, so it gets pretty cool. If things warm up during the day, a wet tea towel over the top helps stop it from warming up.

And if you don't have an esky, take a Broccolli Box from your local F&V
shop - throw it away when you're finished with it.

Phil,
I hope you mean dispose of thoughtfully.
When I first read your follow up I had a picture of a broken white box caught in a bush near the
campsite.
I know that is not what you are advocating.

Hehehe, you're right Duncs. I didn't phrase that
well. If I can rephrase it:
"Just dump it in the Council Tip on the western outskirts of Birdsville"
Cheers

Hi
John
Freeze water in a couple of 2.4 or 3 litre juice bottles (the ones with yellow handles are good) and use an esky. If it all melts you can drink it instead of warm beer. Pre
camp fridge day we just opened the esky at night (outside in the cool) and closed it in the morning and it kept our drinks and supplies cold enough.

G'day
John
If it's just for a couple of days can you not do with beer and steaks? There are plenty of nice meals you could have without it having to include fresh meat - thus avoiding the need for a fridge or esky. Red wine instead of beer for at night. Water during the day. Problem solvered!

We used the esky and left it open at night and that worked fine.
Take black beer or stout that tastes ok if it is not freezing cold. just put meat and perishables in the esky or cold box.

Thanks for all the replies - didn't know it got that cold out there.
The esky or brocolli box with a few frozen things inside is looking pretty good.
I probably could go a day or two without a beer but I'm thinking that sitting out in the desert looking up at the stars with a beer in hand is probably as good as it gets - I'll let you know.
thanks again
John
