Clint & Chell
We are about to set off on our around Australia adventure with the family and are wondering about purchasing a portable BBQ. We were hoping that there might be some advice as to which way to go eg. gas or butane, brands etc. Have people found that they use there BBQ all the time or hardly at all. Obviously it needs to be compact and not too heavy. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi there Chell and Clint,
how are you travelling? as in a caravan, camper etc? how much space do you have and what will you
cook?
we have a camper and found a BBQ plate that fits nicely over two burners which for us is the best of both worlds. just an idea.
good luck on your trip.

We are travelling with a 25ft caravan, don't know how much spare space we have at this stage because we haven't started packing yet. Probably just be cooking steak, sausages, chops, usually aussie BBQ.
Thanks for the
well wishes also.

Check out Biji Barbi.
Folds up flat into a flat-back bag.
Can be used over a fire, gas ring or butane cooker.
Highly recommended !!

We travel the counrty fulltime on a 5 year working (not often) holiday and early in the piece we purchased a weber baby Q with a solid hot plate as
well.
Easy size to store and use for 4 people great for roasts etc cant remember how much we paid but a great little unit...

I agree with "on the run"if you have the space, definately consider a weber q. They
cook a great BBq, fantastic roast and anything else that you care to
cook.

I'll second the baby Q.
We travel a fair bit in our camper trailer and we take our baby Q with us.
They cost about $300.
It's virtually impossible to get a flair up and if you follow the instructions it cooks fairly quickly and roasts to perfection.

You can use the babyQ for pizzas using its hotplate and it will also
cook good scones as
well.
Will also
cook roasts and gives the best pork crackling!!

Baby Q is very economical.
I took a 4.5kg gas cylinder on a 9 week trip last year. We didn't use the babyq everyday, but NEARLY every day of our trip. The 4.5kg ran out on our second last night away. Made a good excuse for Thai restaurant as last night on mainland! :)

Another alternative is the metal bbq top that fits neatly onto a 2 burner stove and is manufactured by Jillbilly. We do bbq style stuff on ours and it works fine.
Hillbilly Camping Products link
It's a BBQ plate to suit 2-burner stove or over campfire $65.00. I think they might even be on special in July.
I have no affiliation with them beyond being a very satisfied customer.

we just use a Campmaster 3 burner gas bbq with a hotplate ($100 all up from Big W). very economical on gas.
Great for bacon & Eggs, steak, snags etc for 3 people. I find the 2 burner a bit too small. just take the hotplate off to use the 3 burners for cooking veges, rice, pasta etc.
We also have a turbo oven (easy
cook) it is electric so we use that when we have power to save on gas, does a great roast & veges, cakes, lasagne, heat up pies, pasta bake, tuna mornay. We have also done scones, nachos. For a total cost of $250 for the bbq and turbo oven, there is pretty much nothing we cant
cook and the advantage of using electricity when available is a great option over just a gas bbq.
we also have a small single burner butane stove (comes in a plastic carry case) it takes the cans of butane refils. Great for heating up a canned meal or boiling the billy on one of the frequent roadside coffee breaks. ours is a primus brand and can be bought for about $25 from
bcf and the refils are available everywhere.
have fun!

We find that if you can't
cook it on a 2 burner flat plate (Basic) BBQ from BBQ Galore or BUnnings (dear I say that word) It can't be cooked. A few people we
camp with watch us and are amased what we
cook on it. Roasts, fried rice, steak, dessert, breaky, Stew,Dianne sauce and any other thing. One stop
shop. Easy store but does not suit everyone. But bleep it suites us. 2x Adults + 2 x Kids.
Magic stuff,

Cannot beat a coleman duel fuel stove and a large cast iron fry pan.
If you cannot
cook it in that than its not worth cooking.
If you want to bake somethink that is what the
camp oven is for.

We considered a Baby Q but decided against it for weight reasons.
We have a 2 burner
camp stove and a double sided plate for it.
Weighs less and takes up much less room.
We cooked on it almost every night of a 12 month trip.
Got so used to using it we now use the
home barbie a lot more than we used to.
Also have a Cobb for roasting on.
Possibly the two will weigh nearly as much as a Q but easier to pack away in our van.

Hi,
I have a CADAC Safari Chef.`(I actually have two) one takes the disposable canisters and the other is fixed to camping gaz N907gas cylinder.
One bought in South Africa, the other in Europe.
When we boughtthe first, we didnt know about the difference in the gas connections. (an adaptor is available for the disposable canistor)
Cooks a good BBQ for the 2 of us, and sometimes with friends for 4 is ok also.
The Cadac also grills, bakes and has a wok/lid, as
well as a burner for the saucepan all in one.
We liked it so much, we bought 2 when travelling between different
places.
We recently bought a cobb, but we like the cadac as cooking with gas is so instant.
Its my ideal choice for a 5-in-1.
Cheers Paul
