shaker pancake recipe?

I didnt know where else I might find an answer to this one.... we use those shake and bake pancake mixes when we go away but it seems wasteful to use it and throw away the bottle and get a new one... so I got thinking that maybe there is a recipe out there for a dry mix you could pre make and then add water or milk to the bottle... though water would be ideal. anyone do this or have ideas? maybe im crazy!

G'day Chipsy,

Our pancake recipe is: 1 cup Flour, 1 1/4 cup milk, 1 egg and a pinch of salt.

You would have to get some powdered milk and powdered egg and then work out the dry equivalent of the 'wet' recipe.

It is do'able but we find with pancake and damper mix we just carry the dry ingredients pre-mixed in a zip lock and just write on the bag what wet stuff is to be added. We always cart milk/water/eggs/beer etc so most recipes are covered.

I have used this one with success. Haven't tried substituting the egg or milk to dehydrated or powered stuff though.

PANCAKE BATTER
1 cup plain flour
1 egg
250ml milk
1 pinch salt

Mix and let stand for 1 hour before use.

Serve with lemon and sugar or whatever you like.

Cheers Kev

Some nice recipes here. If available try putting in a couple of drops of white vinegar, helps for a fluffier and whiter pancake.

I agree with Vic.

The Pancake Parlour Buttermilk Pancake Mix 1 kg is available for about $8 from Woolies (or at least Woolies at Civic Noosa). It comes in a plastic/paper bag similar to regular flour. It makes thick but very light pancakes. To 1 cup of pancake mix add 1.25 cups milk and wait 10 mins. Lovely! 1 kg makes 18 servings of 2 pancakes. This mix is also available as Buttermilk Pancake Mix 1.75kg for approx $10. I bought it at a Bakery in Lancefield, Vic. Both products are the same and are made by Allied Mills Pty Ltd, Summer Hill NSW Customer Service ph 1300 369 869. I phoned and they told me where I could buy it locally.

Alternatively, my scottish grandmother's pikelet recipe can't be beaten:
Beat 2 eggs and 1/2 cup sugar till creamy
Add 1 cup milk
Gently fold in 1-1/2 cups sifted SR flour and pinch of salt.

These measurements are easy to remember as 1/2, 1, 1-1/2, 2
Happy cooking!

Jackie

I have found that this recipe tastes more like the one you buy already made up.

2 cups self raising flour
2 large eggs
2 cups of milk
2 teaspoons of vanilla essence
3 teaspoons of sugar

Then add what you like on top or even slice some bananas and place on top of the batter once it is poured in the pan and let it cook as normal.

thanks for all the replies, what I am ideally seeking is a dry mix that you can just add water to. I thought someone might have had the same thought as me and invented such a recipe, its not to save money just it seemed wasteful to buy it use it once and throw it away but we do love the convenience of just shake and pour.

maybe Ill have to do some experimenting.

What's the waste? The container? Perhaps not great but so convenient - they come out perfect each time and only require water ... I'll certainly keep using them.

Chipsy

try this....instead of adding water to the container of mix,add milk instead(no wastage then, too nice to leave any)

milk makes the pancakes alot more creamier, cheers.

I just found this one on the Web ;)
You still need an egg, water and oil though

Combine the following dry ingredients in a plastic container or gallon-sized bag and shake to mix well:

12 c. flour
4 c. dry instant powdered milk
3/4 c. baking powder
3/4 c. sugar
2 tablespoons salt

Step 2
When you're ready to make the pancakes, use the following recipe:

1 1/2 c. of the dry mix
1 cup water
1 egg
2 tablespoons of vegetable oil

Cheers Kev

Another from the web with dried egg whites ;)

2 1/2 cups whole-wheat flour
1 cup buttermilk powder (see Ingredient notes)
5 tablespoons dried egg whites, such as Just Whites (see Ingredient notes)
1/4 cup splenda
1 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup flaxseed meal (see Ingredient notes)
1 cup nonfat dry milk
1/2 cup wheat bran or oat bran

Whisk flour, buttermilk powder, dried egg whites, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Stir in flaxseed meal, dry milk and bran. Store in an airtight container.

Ingredient notes: Buttermilk powder, such as Saco Buttermilk Blend, is a useful substitute for fresh buttermilk. Look in the baking section or with the powdered milk in most supermarkets.

Dried egg whites, such as Just Whites, reconstituted, can be substituted for fresh egg whites.

Cheers Kev

I have made pancakes at home using above recipe, flour, egg, salt, sometimes vanilla, sometimes sugar, but often i use water instead of milk. It depends on how much milk i have in the fridge.
Crepes I think are made from water instead of milk. (I could be wrong on that)

Experiment at home substituting milk with water. What have you got to lose?

HI Mother of 3 boys and have had this on hand since before I can remember... great for after school snacks too.
4 Cups of Plain Flour
6 Teaspoons Baking Powder
6 Teaspoons Sugar
1 Cup Skim Milk Powder (or Full Cream Milk Powder)
Put these into large container and shake and store.
Then when you want to make pancakes take
1 cup of your Pancake Pre-mix
2/3 cup of water
Mix together, stand for 10 mins, mix again.
Cook pancakes as usual
Great with Real Maple Syrup

So easy (and no egg required!)
