Power buttons on auto's generally hold off the auto gear change to higher engine revs.
I could work in your favor.

As said it just alters the shift points Certainly doesnt give magic extra power
I tried it, didnt seem to make a lot of difference
Dont bother any more.

I tried it on the Jackaroo, just runs the revs up & uses more fuel. It might save the odd down change but not worth it, IMHO..cheers...oldbaz.

On Sals Jack I hit the power button only when I want to maintain speed up hills, then switch it off again. It does stop it labouring in OD .

hi, what i meant was in our Commodore if we tow the van we have to have the power button on to save stuffing up the trans, would it be the same situation in the GQ?. when we took it for a spin around
the block (
well about 20ks) yesterday to see how it would tow the van it seemed happy towing it without the power button on on the flat straights, sitting on 80-90ks and doing under 2500 revs, so we were thinking of only using the power button when going up hills ect and taking it off when on nice straights, but we wanted to make sure we weren't doing any damage by doing this, thanks from chris.

Yes I have read that by using the power button it reduces the temp in the box, so it should help prolong the autos life. With the power button on in the Jack it spends a lot more time in direct drive ie 3rd.
The Jack boxes are a bit lazy and do not like changeing down(set for economy).

GrahamH & Madfisher got it right but IMHO it is definitely worth it (and turn off overdrive too): this reduces labouring and reduces strain on the hills, and helos you maintain speed (so as not to frustrate thiose following)
But of course don't leave it on (and the overdrive off), on the flats, if not needed - as you are just over-revving the motor and (perhaps slightly) over-revving the transmission.

I never tow in O/D or 5th so have never had to try it out on a
hill.
Read the thread "Blown 5th Gear " for the reasons why.

hi there,
on the patrols the power button doesnt work like other most other
transmissions , it goes back to 3rd gear only .
I have a 97 GQ auto and it has a button on the dash for power an economy
and it doesnt do anything , when it was under warranty i took it into dealer
and got them to
check it , even nissan said that it doesnt work .
