It's fascinating how quickly technology is advancing and how it can be used to improve our lives, and in the example I'm talking about here, our travelling.

Here is an ad from a local computer shop here in Mandurah. Dickies are selling the same thing but their ad doesn't show the Iphone.

This security system, with cameras, combined with a free App for your Iphone, will send you an SMS when the cameras detect movement and you can then view the cameras on your Iphone.

How cool is that?

Combine this with Telstra's recent generosity (I never thought I would use that word in the same sentence as "Telstra") associated with the launch of the Iphone 4 and you could get rid of your landline.

Some of Telstra's new plans have a huge amount of included calls and a huge amount of data allowance. The main reason I still have a landline is that I have a monitored alarm system. With the equipment above, I could be the Call Centre and save $100 a month. If the security system calls me, I could look at the cameras and decide whether or not I call out the cavalry.

The amount of included calls and data per month on say, Telstra's $49 Cap Plan ($400 of calls and about 1.5GB of data) means that you could easily get rid of the landline and use your mobile as a modem.

Now if only we could completely get rid of snail mail.....

I'm glad I ain't too scared to be lazy

Dont know whether its really marching on .... or rather they are just reinventing the wheel using using different technology to make you you throw away perfectly good gear to buy something new.

Bit like vehicles ... which are still just boxes on wheels .....

Security systems and mobile phones and pagers have been used since the analogue mobile phone days for monitoring by owners. Theres been two radio gear available since the 80's.

Only problem is .... if you happen to be parked in an underground carpark or somewhere else with bad reception ... the message that an overpriced security mob gets on a landline - may not get through to whats no more than a blingy radio receiver.

All comes in handy convenient sizes and packaging now tho .....

GB.Telstra's new CEO has told the troops to get out in the market and at least match the opposition, hence the current offers. I took the $49 cap but only got 400mb data so looks like they have upped that already. Still a much better deal than they were offering under Sol's leadership. And you certainly can't beat the coverage. Bob.

Oh Dear GB

That harks of 'George Orwell - Nineteen Eighty four' where there can be a camera in everyones home that is monitored by the governement.

With these cameras and the not so secure communications network others with lots of computer savvy could also watch on your network.

I do agree with the convenience of being your own call out centre and being able to monitor your house from on the road - very handy.

The problem with working hard all your life and buying some nice things is other scumbags want to take the shortcut in life and just take your things.

I suppose technology will just keep improving and we need to work with it and around it sometimes to maintain ourselves.

Reminds me of the latest 4WD DVD I watched last night.

A Nissan Patrol stuck at the tip of Cape York because the cover on the key cracked and the transponder died.

The CAR has to be shipped to Cairns for 2K for it to be recoded.

Great stuff technology or buy an extra key and get it coded before going.
