As a new member to this site, I'd just like to put in my two cents (and also as one who has recently posted a 'sat phone or hf?' question). :)
I'm just going to summarise my experience, my point being that a lot of question askers are probably in the same boat. After visiting this site for a few weeks, I can now see how a lot of members are on here a fair bit, contributing helpfully to most questions. So I guess you end up seeing the same questions over and over. However, for the person asking the question, everything is new to them and, in my case anyway, I never knew anything about hf or sat phones before. I did google, and even searched this
forum (a lot of times when you google this stuff, exploroz
forum is the first thing that comes up anyway) but, as others have pointed out, this is not always easy. Searching a term like hf brings up LOADS of threads, and a lot of them are not relevant. Someone may have mentioned hf in a response to a completely different question. When reading the irrelevant threads for a while, you eventually just post your question in the hope that some patient people will respond, even though they've said it a thousand times before.
Also, in my case, by the time I had searched and then posted my question, someone else had posted almost the exact same question a few threads down!! How embarrassing! But it hadn't been there when I started and so I had no idea. I'm sure it was frustrating for those who took the time to answer one of us (or even both of us) that we'd both asked pretty much the same thing on the same day.
One more point is that often it's not that people are asking for 'google' type answers, or for you to make their decisions, but for your OPINION. People like you, who have been doing this for years, are invaluable to people like me, who are just beginning. Your opinion counts, far more than some standard information on a site about
hf radio, because you've been there and done that. You can tell me information that can only be told by people who have real life experience.
Last of all (sorry, this response has become longer than I intended), I cannot wait for the day that I've been travelling
Australia for several years and I can log onto this site and see a question by some 'newbie', asking for advice on something that I am actually privileged enough to know all about. I'll feel so lucky to be in a position to be able to help them, knowing that the reason I can help them is because I've had all these experiences.
Now, I know that still, some people ask silly questions that they should google first, but this is just my story that I wanted to share because I'm sure many of the offending 'askers' are in the same boat.
And, I'll use this opportunity to say thank you very much to everyone here for your invaluable opinions, both in responses to my questions and to other questions I have found useful.

yes well said.
i have had a few experiences myself with grumpy people not liking my post because the answer to them seemed simple or i wished to do something that they wouldnt do therfore i was wrong etc etc.
if you dont like a question ignore it, if you feel that you canhelp and have time to reply than no doubt 99% of the time your response will be greatly appreciated.

Agree
I usually Google search first but with practise the Exploroz search function can be useful. For example I did some recent research on tyres and found if I searched on a very narrow phrase I could get mainly relevant posts come up on the search. "bfg" "toyo" "694" were tried with good results. I also limited the search to the last 2 years threads. There are ways of getting the search function to work to advantage.
Looking up the older posts could well be difficult for the beginner. It was for me. I have become better at it and have noticed the same people who gave an answer last year or the year before now give a somewhat different answer to a similar question. Age, wisdom, experience and changed priorities lead to changes in peoples opinions that they themselves may not even be aware of. We do change over time.
There is a minor issue with the archiving of threads after you have asked a question and got some answers. I like to give some
feedback on how I followed up on that advice but have to be quick or thread will be archived. I am sure this happens to others as well so some threads are left a bit "up in the air". Question asked, advice given but how did it turn out?
