Hi everyone, heading uo to Fraser Island during Sept/Oct schools holidays. We expect to be camping off the beach north of Eurong. I was last at Fraser some years ago during winter and don't recall any sandflies, but I have no idea about the middle of spring. Anyone had any experience with the little bities in that area during early Oct? Thanks.

I lived at Hervey Bay and took advice of locals, eat lots of marmite or vegemite sandwiches every day also mix half oil and detol and put on arms and legs, we never had any bites after this. The midgies wont go near you, they were around all year but some months they test your patience.

Don't forget the "March flies".
They are vicious and painful.

Bllue clothing seems to attract them
Google "march flies at fraser island" and read all about them

never had a problem with the flies when we've been there around Sept. / Oct. from memory. as mentioned by Peter the "March flies" are vicious, but i only remember them being there and being bad, when we were camped on Fraser over Xmas / Newyears period.

From my experience of many trips to Fraser, including Sept / Oct, sand flys are not a problem on the East coast (but are on the West). March flys are the issue on the East once the temp warms up. At least you can see the March flys and they are pretty slow - but their bite does hurt.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the responses. I'm a bit anxious about these things because (unlike March Flies) you don't know you're being bitten until after the damage is done. Our 11 yo daughter is autistic and it's been very difficult in the past to stop her from scratching insect bites. Prevention is the key. Cheers. Rob.

Hi There,
I am allergic to sandfly bites and have tried everything known to man to prevent bites. The army uses an Avon product called skin so soft (SSS) range that is supposed to work for sandflys. Also I always carry a gadget that you can get at the Chemist that gives you a tiny zap that prevents the bites from getting really bad...really worth having.
