My question is How do you use the submersible pump to pump water through the heat exchanger?

The heat exchanger idea is good, we have one on our Patrol. But we have a marine pressure pump to supply water to it. Couple of fittings on the front bar and can run a hose and shower rose with any water supply.

The pump in the picture is useful if you have a bucket of hot water and want to shower from it. But I cant see how you could easily get that bucket of hot water using that pump.

Just my thoughts.

The idea with this system is that you cut the suply line between the pump and the shower rose. The pump with a short bit of hose on it connects to the inlet side of the heat exchanger and the rose with the remaining bit of hose connects to the outlet side. This would work well in theory but I don't think that the hose supplyed with the shower unit would be long enough to do both jobs after it has been cut.

We use one of the exact same shower unit with a 20L metal drum with about 15L of water in it, heat it on a fire or about 15-20 min. on a gas cooker and you get a nice warm shower

Hi Prado Mad,

It’s hard to tell what all of the components are but from what I can see, the heat exchanger should be okay and almost all of the other components as well. The pump however looks like one of the cheaper types that wont last long. If you buy the unit, go to a boat place (BCF or Whitworths etc) and replace the pump with a quality 12v boat bilge pump, (usually under $50).

This will give a good unit for well under Glind pricing and you'll get years of good service from an outfit like that.

cheers

Phil

the heat exchanger is either a Helton or a copy. There are 2 types, a shower exchanger and a hot water exchanger (hotter water). i have the hot water one in my patrol and it works great. I also have the shower attachment but don't use their pump. i have a 4.4 Litre/min flojet and it works a treat I connect it inline with the water supply. I can have a decent shower with 5 litres of water.

I am disappointed when advertisers promote their product with statements suggesting pulling up to a creek to have a shower. There is an implication that such practice is OK - its not OK because it puts soap etc into the waterway and that is harmful to fish and other animals.

A few years ago we were camped as part of a large group in a special place in central Australia. One member of the support crew (in a vehicle emblazoned with his dealer logos) regularly drove to the rapidly drying billabong for a shower. Guess where the soap went.

IMHO a $25 12V shower/pump unit drawing from a small bucket of water heated over the fire or the gas gives an excellent shower at a fraction of the cost. Its also a very flexible arrangement. Certainly gives enough hot water for this "missus".

Hi Val and Allan

That's what we have been using for the past years, paid under $ 60.00 from BFC.

Works great every time.

Thanks Guys
..you have convinced me; why spend hundreds of hard earned dollars for a whole system when the alternative seems more unique and practical.
Will get myself a pump and shower rose this weekend.
