Hi all,

Recently purchased one of the Pat Callinan DVDs (Canning Stock Route) - under the impression it'd be predominantly about the Canning Stock Route and his journey along it, with a few tips (saftey. etc.) along the way.

I was disappointed to find that the DVDs were filled full of product placements (e.g. a car company, a tyre company, a bush clothing company, a comms company). It got to the point where it was almost ridiculous. Just to test this i got two other people to watch it, without giving them any comments, and had the same problem pointed out to me. Whilst i think it's interesting to see what equipment's around, and i picked up a few good tips (it was good to see the ExplorOz sand flag featured), i think this needs to be balanced.

Perhaps it would have been different if i'd seen it on TV as an episode, as this is what Pat appears to have targeted his show towards. Then again, on TV you'd get the adds in the episode, plus the adds from the TV networks.

It would be interesting to see the breakdown between DVD time spent on the Canning Stock Route and advertising.

Any ideas if the other Pat Callinan DVDs follow a similar format of lots of product placement?

Can anyone recommend a DVD of the Canning Stock Route with a little less advertising and more about the trip itself?

Safe Travels,

Nick

Hi OzTroopie

An anthropologist named John Carty PhD recently did a full trip of the CSR with a group of tribal people. Apparently there is some mkind of exhibitgion happening at the moment involving John, who is a great young bloke, and he would have any knowledge of the whereabouts of the DVD that they made.

Cheers

I have also purchased the Peter Ikin DVD (from the ExplorOz shop) and it was about the trip, not the ego. I'd recommend it.

Hey OzTroopie I posted a thread a few months ago while watching the show, pure crap was what I was thinking, but they advertise here and they advertise him, so crap happens I guess.

There's been quite a few posts on "Mr 4x4's" television series, mostly expressing disappointment at the content and the blatant infomercial style of the program. You have to remember that he is a journo and this is how he makes his living. Everything he drives, tows or uses is provided under commercial contract and the advertising that is implicit with such partnerships drives the content of the show. In a sense you could say that he is actually providing a service much like this site in that he is providing information to the public and it is targeted to an audience, namely the less experienced outback traveller. For example, my step dad loves it but then he drives a Disco and his idea of 4x4 is engaging the diff locks to get her up on the bark garden so mum can wash it for him. The show does give him opportunity to view products related to the 4x4 industry that he wouldn’t ordinarily be exposed to and on the rare occasion, he gets some brief glimpses of the great Australian outback (between the info spots for ARB products and the Nissan). Personally I would rather watch repeats of “Neighbours” than Pats efforts which is akin to having your eyes put out with red hot knitting needles.

It keeps Pat and his kids in big hats and custom drizabones though.

My 2 cents worth only.

Nick, Ya "Live and Learn" mate, live and learn!

Totally agree with Mick O, the DVDs and TV shows are nothing but infomercials.

And the real danger is that because the products are supplied then there is no real comparisons or critique as to their quality or suitability to purpose even though Pat Callinan would have you believe that (a) he is expert on the product, and (b) the product is the best available!

Cheers

I can understand the advertising viewpoint for free TV, however, if you are actually purchasing the DVD, then any direct commercial advertising on that DVD is simply double dipping.

The Gall Boys ( Kedron Caravans ) have an interesting one ( no ads) on the top few hundred K's of CSR.

Just watching the second episode on One HD now - I have to agree the program has gone very infomercial and more information on the trip he is doing would be better.

After watching this program, with the exception of its remoteness and distance between fuel stops - the CSR is portrayed as a walk in the park - well we all know different.

Pat - I know the commercial realities of making these programs where sponsor exposure is important but I think you have gone too far on the product side and not enough about the trip itself.

Afternoon Dudes,
Does it really matter if it's full of adds, sometimes you just might learn something from them.
It's easy viewing with terrific scenery and it's far better than watching a bunch of grown men chase a ball around.

I'll take the bunch of grown men chasing a ball around, thanks......

Now Beach Volleyball (played by persons of the feminine gender), that's a whole 'nother ball game altogether...............

Just a suggestion-- check your local library for 4x4 DVD topics. I viewed both his first and second season titles with library DVD`s. Cost me nothing and I was glad to hand them back! As you said ,the advertisement content was over the top. Regards G.T.

Hi everyone,
I get the feeling that he dumbs things down, like he is talking to schoolkids all the time.

But I must confess to being a little jealous that he gets a tax deduction for everything related to his trips and I dont.

Cheers,

Wooly

I know a bit late, but several years ago I brought Ron Moon's video on Cape York and the same thing it was nothing but ad's. I wrote to him and said I wanted my money back but it appears he's blind (can't read) and never heard from him.
