you get a overseas phone call from a person with an accent, they say your email is going to the wrong address and say they can fix the problem for big dollars.
this is a hoax, be careful, as it is newest one happening. my brother in law has being done.
my father in law almost got done.
pass on too everyone you know.
this is not a hoax.

Add on the one I got from Telstra saying my last payment had a problem and click the link to fix it.
As I havent paid them anything on my new account they missed out.
There is also one going on mobile phones saying you have won $2,000,000 in a FREE promo lottery and to ring the number in the SMS for more details.
Return call will probably cost $15 or similar.
Check Snopes for all of these just to make sure.

I had a phone call telling me that there was problems with M.S Windows and they could fix it for me and would download updates for life, if I paid them $200. Sounded to good to miss at that price.....
Why would anyone listern to a stranger on the Phone.

Sometimes it is so easy to get sucked into these scams. My other brother in law has a brtoher that ahs spent 10 k on one scam, he is a little disabled, from a dating scam. the one that got caught this time happens to be a manager of a company, not exacatly stupid by any means, just caught off guard, and i have being caught off guard as
well!!!!
you could be thinking of something else and then you get a call sying sorry i am recieveing your emails, and the isp will fix it for you??? for a price.
We are humans, we all have the same varying degrees. hey i got caught with win7, thought i was on a good deal, found out and got burnt!!! and i don't get burnt, usually!!! but i will find out who this person is???? one day.
there's a couple of good sites above to
check, hoax slayer is one.

Had a call a couple of weeks ago from a guy saying we had paid tooo much TAX (would you believe that one) and they would place the refund straight into our account if i gave him the numbers.
Don't think i would have to tell anyone on this sight what was said from our end.
Cheers
Baz

If , for what ever reason , your tempted to believe these strangers on the phone ( for what ever reason ) Simply ask for there contact details as your busy right this minute - if its combank , or any bank or ATO they will give there 1300 number or toll free number - if they dont want to give you a number and make up an excuse as to why not --- then simply hang up

We had one like this and I had it passed over to me from Bruce. I just asked for their phone number and said I would ring them back. They made up a Victorian number and gave it to me. The trouble was that it had one more digit than it should. There was a moment or two of confusion from them before they sort of reeled off a number which no doubt they made up on
the spot.

You still need to be carefull with this as it is possible to have a VOIP number for any area in Australia. When you ring back you will get a very official sounding person that could be anywhere in the world.
If a caller is offering or asking for anything it's best to just ignore them.

HI chriss , thats kind of my point though - if they do INFACT offer you a number it will be a 131 or 1300 or 1800 number a voip will be easily spotted
you can then take that number , put it in google and it will come up with the company name for example - try 132 132 in google - it will show you one of the large Australian companies and a direct link to there webpage - dont even need to know who it is when you try that number , if the number they gave is verified this way - then maybe its legit
If they offer a dodgey number or a number that is not 1300 1800 ect then it will not be legit as customers service providers hardly ever give direct numbers - but ask that you contact there toll free numbers then ask for them through the various sections
Hope this helps someone in the future to be more fraud wary

No, it wasn't a 1300 number or anything like that. I knew that asking them for a number would 'throw' them.
When we were selling out Troopy you would be surprised at how many scam emails, sms messages etc we received. Anything that is too good to be true usually is.
Besides their foreign accent gives a slight clue, not to mention none of the 'real' companies contact in that fashion.
The worst thing is that some people can get caught.
The scams we know of are just amazing.

Chris, I had one of those calls on speaker phone on the 8th of December and you could hear the caller being coached in the background. When I said I thought she should call someone who believed her, she dumped my call. Must have phoned your brother in law after that.
Calling number display indicated India starting +91 but only three more digits
