How well do you know your Prados?

Does anyone know when the various diesel engine/gearbox options were released on the 120-Series Prado?

I understand that the 120-Series Prado was released in 2003 with a 3.0L TD (same as the 90-Series Prado had) and a 5 speed manual gearbox, which continued until the end of 2005. It was my understanding that in 2006, the Prado was released with the D4D CRD engine and a 6 speed manual gearbox (as well as some other changes), which continued until the end of 2009 (after which time the 150-Series Prado was released).

I have recently seen a dealer advertising a 2004 model Prado with the D4D engine (you can see the D4D badges in the photos) with a 5 speed gearbox - I didn't think the D4D came out that early, or with the 5 speed gearbox.

Can anyone provide a summary of the model run, particularly the engine/gearbox options, or point me in the direction to find this info?

(Please don't suggest I ask on PradoPoint - I'm still waiting for them to approve my log-in that I applied for in mid-2009!)

Hi Tim

My 120 Series is plated November 2005 and purchased in January 2006. It is the standard 5 speed/Non D4D Diesel Motor. I was told that the D4D and the 6 speed were released some time in 2006. From what I am told, the Hilux had the new D4D in 2005. If the 2004 is advertised as a D4D, he may have had a new motor fitted?

I have never uses PradoPoint, only had the occasional look. When I applied to join it in late September 2010, I was approved in just 1 day?? Have you reapplied or asked what has happened to your request.

Cheers

Thanks for your reply Stephen - that's what I thought: the D4D was released in Oz in 2006, with the 6 speed manual.

It's possible (likely!) that the dealer has the wrong details or photos etc. - unfortunately I can't check it out as I'm not local right now. Maybe he'll sell it before I get back and it will be a non-issue anyway...

I assume you're happy with yours - is there anything (other than usual 4WD or car things like abuse, lack of maintenance, etc.) that I should be looking for in potential purchases?

Hi Tim
Yes we are very happy with our 120 Series Prado, even if it is the older diesel engine. The only thing I do not personally like is the ABS Brakes.

The 180 lite fuel tank as standard wins hands down for outback trips.

Cheers

Thanks again Stephen
The 180L fuel tanks is a very good point and nothing else comes close (many similar sized vehicles only have about 70-75L).

Any particular reason you don't like ABS? Had scarey experiences, or just don't like it in principle?

Hi Tim
They are working correctly, but hate the way they will not stop you on rutted and dirt wash a ways compared to my other non ABS vehicles. Just my thoughts only.

Cheers

The first D4D Prados in Australia were Nov.2006 plated.
All Australian D4D 120 Prados came with either 5 speed Auto or 6 speed manual. Anything else is a grey import or engine swap.

Thanks Andrew - I wasn't sure of the month, but that was my understanding about being matched to the 6spd man and being released in 2006 (at least in Oz).

I'd be steering clear of a grey import, or something that had an engine swap after only 120,000km without a good explanation!

The D4-D motor (1KD-FTV) was available overseas since about 2000 - they delayed its release in Australia - maybe because of the quality and higher sulpur content of Aussie diesel which has improved since. Most likely the photo or date are wrong, or its a grey import. Same thing with the 90series Prados - diesel was released in Australia March 2000 but was available overseas for a few years prior to this. The grey imports had more flashy features and fewer practical features - only a single fuel tank for instance.

Thanks Phil.

Actually, I'd heard that some of these delayed releases were due to potential head issues with the diesel engine in Australia's climate, and the need to redesign the head to prevent cracking (or at least reduce the likelihood).
