Diahatsu Coure

My wife has a 2000 Diahatsu coure. Nice little "shopping trolley" and goes like hell with it's 1000cc fuel injected engine BUT at times it will not restart after a run, mainly in hot weather. There is spark when you crank the engine but appears to lack fuel. I have search for the fuel filter but cannot find it but as yet have not checked the fuel pump.
This non starting is only intermittent and therefore hard to trace. Does anybody have any suggestions???????

G'Day Ray,
I would bet you it could be the crank angle sensor. Can be a bugger to diagnose.
When engine fails to start 'spray' sensor with LPG or similar to 'freeze/cool' it, then try & start the engine, if it starts its the crank angle sensor that is at fault.

I would bet it could be lots of things but if it was a crank angle sensor it would most likely NOT have spark!
Please DONT go spraying LPG around in your engine bay!
When it doesn't start i would suggest having someone else turn the key on, not crank, and listen at the fuel tank under the car. The fuel pump should operate for 2-3 seconds so you should notice and audible hum. if there is a hum then the pump is operating. If there is no hum then potentially a fuel pump issue.

Without some diagnostic equipment we can only make educated guesses.

definately wouldnt going spraying LPG in there as mentioned by Dan, crazy idea, a bottle of water will do the same trick, this is extremely common on commodores as well, vr,vs upwards when they start to get a few klms on them. Generally they will restart after 15mins of letting cool down but water will obviously do it quicker. Dont know about the vehicle you are mentioning but worth a try, nothing to lose except 500ml of water. Regards Steve

Fuel filter is part of the fuel sender unit, you will have to pull the entire sender out of the tank, the unit is all sold as one and is around the $400 mark from memory. They were made so that you never had to replace the filter.
