Is it common for the"metal bit" that holds the camper trailer's three poles together to bite the canvas as you close the camper trailer? I saw a very lightly used second hand camper trailer today that had holes in the canvas caused by that "metal bit" or is this a manufacturing fault that the owner did not resolve within the warranty period? The canvas here is 12oz Dynaproofed canvas.

What brand of CT. I have a 2001
Kimberley and you have to ensure that the doors are folded back outside the end of the tent to make sure this does not happen. A little bit of TLC should ensure it doesn't happen.

It was a Bell Canvas one, but judging by the responses so far, it sounds like a lack of care when folding away rather than quality / defect? Can't fault the canvas, as it is 15oz dynaproofed on the roof and 12oz dynaproofed on the walls. It's interesting that the same tears weren't on the opposite end of the camper.

I had an earlier KK ( now have the extended tent ) and folding the doors back enables you to see where the canvas can get pinched ( the extended tents doors can't be folded back )..but won't stop it happening if you aren't careful..
All C/T's have a weakness somewhere when folding them up.....you just have to know what it is !!

Yes it's very common even on top end campers when not enough care is taken to tuck the canvas in properly as it can pinch between the poles then rub in transit.

Is it usually the retractable poles that bite as they are being retracted? Or is it the metal bit that holds the three poles? I've never owned a camper trailer, so I appreciate if you can briefly explain the correct way to pack away a camper. Cheers!

Haven't heard of retactable poles biting the canvas. (I doubt that's even possible)
Different campers have different pinch points but on one's I've seen damaged, canvas wears in transit when sandwitched between poles, between the poles & body & cuts when caught in the pole hinge bracket. Often helps to have a 2nd person running around tucking the canvas in. Each camper will have a slightly different system of packing up & the dealer should explain that when you purchase it.
Cheers Craig..............

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. Have none of the camper trailer companies come up with something that can prevent the canvas from being caught in the pole hinge bracket?

Yep, this even happened to me with the upmarket Oztrail. Very hard to be inside
the tent when folding it up. Easily cured by taping a loose fitting vinyl sock to the
first two poles..that is tape it solidly to the pole about 6" from the bottom &
form a cone that goes over the metal bracket at the bottom where the pole attaches. Stitch or staple as required......oldbaz.

Hi garbage
Our Oztrail camper top also had this problem, but the manufacturer of our C/T had recognized this, and had a cover over the folding area where the 3 poles hinge, so the canvas couldn't get caught between the hinge parts as it was getting folded up. It looked like a glove, so to speak.
It was one of the first things the dealer told us about when we bought it. 4 years on, no tears. I would take a
pic of it, but I sold it 6 weeks ago! Waiting on the van to arrive.....
Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave. The one I saw also had a vinyl/plastic cover over this spot, but it had also cut through this to get to the canvas.

Happened just the once to us with our 04 Campomatic - have to take care in that spot when closing all canvas campers - we had a small tear and I patched it from the inside by gluing and clamping a small piece of identical canvas (canvas stores / tent makers etc. have samples). My mend ended up near invisible from the outside.

G'day. Yep we made the same mistake first time we packed up our cub camper...didn't lay the canvas back in correctly and the poles pinched a series of small holes. The question I have is, how can I neatly repair the damage without having to remove the whole canvas? I have an ezi-awl, but I'm not sure how neatly I could do it.
