Hi everyone,
Hoping someone may have information on what 4x4 and camper trailer i may be able to buy for about $30,000 that will be suitable for off road travelling.
I know it is not a huge budget but it has taken a long time to save that much,
also interested to hear if anyone has one already paired up that may be suitable.
Cheers
Steve

Hey Steve
There are a heap of good ones around for that money. You fail to say if want want a new one or second hand? Also how many people do you want if for? A family of 4 or just you and the missus maybe.
I just spent about that money (last week) on ours including 2 x Englel fridges, generator etc etc.
Give us a bit more info and the guys on here will be able to give you the right advice.
Regards

Hi Jason,
I was looking at a second hand unit and it sounds like you got an absolute bargain at that price.
Only my wife i on the trip, so as long as i stay in the good books i should only need one bed. :-)
cheers

If there is only 2 of you ,a slide on camper on a ute might be a practical solution.
Some people grow to hate towing a trailer.
A
well set up slideon can be offloaded in half an hour or less sometimes.
The one I had allowed you to be ready for bed in sub 5 mins

Hi Steve,
How many of you will be travelling in the vehicle, or sleeping in the camper? What sort of travelling do you want to do - sticking to the bitumen,
Canning Stock Route or somewhere in between?
How long timewise will your trips be - weekend or 2 years around
the block?
Does your budget include all the extras like fridge, power supply etc?
With a bit more info you will get a heap of good advice on here.
Cheers,
Val

G'day Steve, all good advice above & with more details of your plans, even more will follow. In the end it will be your choice, as the options are endless & you need
to examine closely the attributes important to you ,& on a comparison basis.
Most will recomend what they own, thats human nature, but still worthy of
consideration. I put together a combination for under $20k that works fine for us,
so your budget will get you a sound setup...if you buy carefully. I may offer more
"wisdom" when you let us know the details, but will add that a very good V6
Jackaroo can be had for under $15k, & they are an excellent tow vehicle...& yes,
of course I own one..:))))...cheers oldbaz.

Thanks guys, your
feedback is what i needed, There will only be my wife and i on the trip i will be doing a few short trips around W.A. first to sort out what works and what is missing and then plan to hit the road with no real time limit.
In my plans are to hopefully go to
places like
Canning Stock Route,
Gibb River Road as
well as the easier
places. I intend to build up my experience first in the easier
places first and ensure i am prepared and capable to attempt the harder trips. i have worked in remote areas for many years so i am under no illusions as to the need to be prepared for such
places.
I have allowed the $30.000 just for 4x4 and camper, i have a Engel and some other items already i have been buying bits and pieces for a couple of years in preparation.
Cheers
Steve

Steve,
I've got a Kimberly Kamper and its simple to set up and can handle a bit of a battering on the bush track, there's plenty of storage a queen size bed,the newer models have got a diesel hotwater system .
The Australian off road campers are a good unit as
well have at the Trader section there are a couple for sale.
Once you buy your camper Steve you will do mods to it to suit yourself anyway .good luck

Thanks Julie,
Sorry for trouble with moderators, i am new to this as
well and should have left out the bit about
buying a camper trailer.
I had a look at the Pioneer campers at the 4 wheel drive show in
Perth two years ago and they did look pretty good. The Onyx sounds like an excellent unit
and would be the sort of Camper i hope to get.
I think from memory new price would put them out of my reach, so hopefully second hand they might fit into my budget.
Cheers
Steve

Dear Steve,
An excellent and true 4x4 off-road camper is a pioneer onyx which are made in W.A, We have had a few really good trips in ours. Queen size bed, an extra zip on bedroom/,pull out sink/stove. Has space for fridge/freezer... solar panel, fantastic large awning, Hard floor etc..... Lots of and room to carry jerry cans,
water tank. Pioneer do make a large range of camper trailers but we believe out of them all the onyx had more to offer.
Kind Regards
Julie

Hi Steve,
For your price I reckon the following would fit you and your wife, allowing under or above $15,000 for each (vehicle and trailer):
A hard floor camper in that price would be the CUB campers. Not as flash as the Kimberleys or others mentioned above, but a second hand one fits into the budget (2nd hand
Kimberley etc does not!). A few examples below.
CUB 1CUB 2CUB 3CUB 4
As for a vehicle, I might be biased, but a 90 Series Prado turbo diesel. We have a petrol one because we couldn't afford a diesel at the time, but for just 2 people they would fit the touring role prefectly. I took the wife and 2 kids around Australia for 6 months with ours, so it would fit 2 adults easy enough. They are a reasonably torquey motor with good economy and with 160 litres standard, you will get great range. Some below:
Prado 1Prado 2
There's also the 80 and 100 Series Landcruisers with a lot more room but standard (slow) diesels, unless you get an aftermarket turbo. Generally they will have far more kms for the price compared to the Prado's.
100 Series80 Series
Happy hunting.
Mark.

Cheers Mark,
I tend to agree about the Landcruisers we had 100 series on a
mine site 7 years ago and they were sadly lacking in power.
I was actually looking at Prados in the Sunday Times today but not knowing much about them went to the Patrols and Cruisers so it is good to hear from someone who has one. I will now revisit the ads and take a bit more notice.
The Cub will certainly be worth a look going by the ads you found.
Thanks for your efforts in posting the information above, it is a huge help.
Steve
