Went down to the servo to fill the ute up.

Next to me was a new Hyundai AWD something with an off road trailer behind it.

I didn't take too much notice of it until he went to drive off.

In order to get the trailer level, he had bolted (with two bolts) the tow ball and mount on top of a two foot extension that was then inserted into the hitch.

Looked like he at least used high tensile bolts......

Was this a home made joB? It is possible to purchase through Hayman Reece etc devices for changing tow height that are perfectly safe and legal and could be covered by your description. Or it could be something very dicey indeed.

Two Feet or inches? I purcashed a tounge that has two H/T bolts that can be adjusted by moving the holes or flipping the assembly. I use it as I run different tyre sizes. It is rated to 2000kg. I did note that there is no reference to the touque of the bolts as they are 10.9 or that they should only be done up once and not to use a spring washer.

Hi RussellP,

Was it anything like this?Image Could Not Be Found

If so, quite safe and legal. I used this one the other way. My Hilux is 'lifted', and my brother has a standard box trailer, so I had to get down lower. But two feet???

Cheers, Dave

Hi all,

I tow a three horse float with the appropriate HR drop hitch and WDH, so am very familiar with their towing gear.

The setup that I saw was a two foot extension coming horizontally out of the hitch, and the ball and mount was then bolted to the top of it to give the extra height (aout 2 inches). There was only about a four inch overlap between the two. There were two bolts that went thru both tubes to hold them together.

I'd hate to see what would happen when he has to brake suddenly on a corner....

I would have liked to have a chat with the driver to see what the go was, but I was still filling up as he left.

I'll try to draw up a diagram and post it.

Hello Russell. I begin to envisage what you are talking about. My first thought was something like the photo Bushwacker posted. If it is what I think I am seeing from your description now, I think it would be very dodgy.
