What’s normal for Toyota’s V8 Diesel
The following is an extract from Toyota’s Customer Information Sheet on Landcruiser oil consumption.
“The engine was developed for performance and fuel efficiency with low friction engine components such as; resin coated pistons, low tension piston rings, low viscosity oils and is expected to use a nominal amount of oil. 1 litre/8000ks for normal conditions. 1 litre/5000ks for severe operation conditions such as; sustained high speed operation, frequent and hard acceleration and deacceleration, high engine load conditions such as towing or high payload conditions, prolonged low speed operation particularly in low range"
It also goes on to say that;
Top up is not necessary if oil level on dip stick is between low and high mark.
Top up with 1 litre, within 300ks, if low level oil CAUTION light goes on.
Stop vehicle if low oil pressure WARNING light goes on.

Word of mouth which is not always spot on suggests much higher consumption figures for the V8 to the degree it becomes a worry.
What is the sump capacity if they give you a 300km safe margin after the warning light comes on ?
By comparison my 1HZ takes almost 10 litres of oil when I change it and the filter every 5000 kms, I think that's an expense I could do without and in saying that it doesn't use oil between changes.
Rob.

Hi racinrob, The Pajero has oil & filter every 15,000km if being driven a distance & 5,000km (I think) when only driven short/local distance. Haven't used any oil yet & not likely to. Love that car!!!

Hi Dennis, Good bit of info. Is this ALL V8 cruisers or are the latest models OK. I do not own one but just asking this problem has been around for 4 years now & I wonder (Hence my question) is it still occuring. Any knowledge as to warranty, fixing it or engine expolsions? Would be a costly rebuild if out of warranty. Thank goodness my Pajero doesn't use oil, water or any fluids.

The information sheet I have indicates this is the consumption for all thier Landcruiser V8 diesels.
SomeToyota reps I've dealt with say some earlier motors had dicky seals in the turbo which were replaced under warranty, when oil consumption fell outside these limits.
I have a Feb 2008 V8 Troopy 70,000ks which falls
well within these limits at about 3 quarters a litre for 10,000 - I tow a 3 tonne caravan (2 - 20,000k loops around Australia) and if I'm towing, working it hard, lots of hills etc it will use about a litre and a half for 10,000.
The first trip was with a mate towing with the previous model 6 cylinder diesel and a 3 tonne van - he said he had a bit less power but his fuel consumption was about the same as
mine.

Your post is timely Dennis. I just put one litre of oil in my 79 series for a distance of 10,000km. Most of this was towing and on outback roads. I didn’t have that much usage in the first 10k and there was a lot of “severe” usage (I’d prefer the term heavy myself). I’m happy with that. What has been a disappointment has been the fuel consumption. It’s nowhere near what they advertise it to be even under the best of driving conditions. I’ve had no better than 6 kpl and the average is somewhere between 5-6 kpl (17 litres per 100 km). Worst has been about 3.5 kpl but that involved all off track work.
Cheers Mick

No Good Mick about fuel use , your probably doing this, but I write down every bit of fuel that goes into car with a rough note listing tyre type as
well.
does vary a bit , the average with my new petrol patrol is 17lt also.
My mates 79 V8 tray with canopy is around 14lt/100km but he isn't that careful about recording things.

Its been my experience over the years Mick that just fitting tyres with a more aggressive tread and stiffer walls results in increased rolling resistance and increased fuel consumption. Roughly 2mpg in the old measurements for the tyres, 2mpg for the roofrack and 2 mpg for the trailer. Running muddies, towing the camper with the roofrack fitted and a tinny on top the old troopy used it at a horrific rate if pushed past 90kph.
Never mind the weight in and on it ;-)))

Hi Mick, i don't want to make you feel bad but I have been getting around 2- 2.2 km/l from my trucks with a gvm of 45 tons, B-doubles 1.5 to 1.7 km/l at 65 tons. When you work it out the truck engines are far more efficient than 4x4 engines and I can't work out why with all the new technology out there. Cheers Mick

Yep - I don't know the exact figures, but a railway engine will kill your B-double for fuel economy. But the're not much good climbing sand dunes.

"O" what an engine, our Tojo V8 doesn't use any oil what so ever, but it can use petrol ok, 15-17 ltrs per 100ks around town and 22-24 per 100ks towing the van.

Damn , that's about the same usage as my GU 4.2 TDI ute gets , a few of my mates have those 4.7 Toyota V8's - they are pretty good even when working hard .

The 1HD-FTE has never required oil top ups and gives great fuel economy. Not as quick though but hey it's all at the margins anyway.

For all those V8 diesal owners
check your oil after each service as they try to hide oil usage by overfilling at service. I have photos of overfilling by at least 20mm on several occasions.

Hi Dennis,
I am on my second 79 V8 Toyota, a 2007 & now a 2009. Both vehicles used between 1-2 ltrs of oil between 10,000km
services until they got to approx 70,000k then the oil consumption stopped.
I ran the 2007 in gently & the 2009 like it was stolen. I also tried several brands of oil which made no difference.
Fuel economy is around 7km per litre / 6km per litre towing camper trailer.

Hi Dennis
I have a 2007 4.5 V8 my numbers are identical to Steve's. I service my own(as I have done with all my vehicles) as per handbook. 20,000 Kms between changes, the same as my 8 yro. Peugeot. The cruiser gets Delo gold 15w .40
