Hi all,
Its ages since I drove the
Dargo to
Licola track which includes
Billy Goat Bluff. My question is what is this track like now a days especially
Billy Goat Bluff for towing camper trailers, mates and I tow our campers just about everywhere, but just wanted some feed back if possible.. One camper pushes the weigh
bridge at about 1400kg..
If course i understand if its wet it will be completely different..
Cheers any info will be good.

Hi Blaze
The tracks in reasonable condition at moment - but
bluff stills needs a reasonable 4wd with good clearance, so towing a trailer up it is at the upper end of whats reasonably possible.
Are you going via Wonnagatta road from
Dargo - or via
Talbotville and the river crossings which are quite passable at this time ?

From
Talbotville is the plan Robin, This will be at the end of April so of course conditions of the rivers can change.. I will
check on here about the river closer to the date.
Cheers

Good idea to
check Blaze, its usually dry then but you don't know.
Over Xmas you would expect to do that drive from
Talbotville , however the road was closed south of the Cynthia spur track because the next river crossings were bad and one almost had a waterfall across it.
As a result you had to do a long bypass and go up Randals and then down Conway to get to the
bridge on the Wonnagatta road.
Randals was worse than Billy goat this year with significant steep rocky bits and ledeges.

Eaglevale end of Billy Goats to the helipad is easier than it used to be, but it does get very loose further on that could make it quite hairy with a 1400kg camper trailer.

I forgot to add that the Tamboritha Road is the smoothest that I have seen it ever, I was up there only last week.

Hi Blaze,
For the most part
Billy Goat Bluff track is in reasonable condition but at the top there is a lot of loose stuff and some nasty
rock ledges to encouter with 300-400mm steps and i wouldn't fancy trying to tow a camper up there at the moment.Going down with care is quite doable though.
Cheers Mark

Yep, but if he has to back down giving way to a vehicle coming down....now that would be entertaining LOL.

Drop the trailers off at King-swell
Bridge (there is plenty of flat land by the river....Then either go
the junction spur way off crooked river road or go up Billy Goats and come back around
junction spur and then back to Kingswell
Bridge to get ya campers ......Easy ~(*--)

Blaze, I did Billy Goat about 2 years ago, and am looking at doing again early March or April.
We will be heading into
Dargo via Wonnangatta (Zeka Spur) and out via Wombat and Cynthia Range so anyone with advice please send as the tracks and river crossings could be a challenge this year. we will leave
dargo (next day) via Billy Goat.
I would not recommend towing anything up Billy Goat as it is quite loose towards the top (unless you have a new V8 diesel LC - then maybe). Most of the track was reasonably good apart from that. But that was a couple of years and it could be worse now. Best to call the DSE at
Dargo for advice.

SA - I have traveled through the area 3-4times now in the last 2 months the most recent being last week.
I can tell you Billy Goat has repidly degraded over the last 2 months. For the most part it is clean, there is a bit more loose stuff now and there are a couple of spots on it now that are quite rough the very worse being right up near the top and it seems to be worsening still.
Very rough and steep
rock 'garden' that has seen a number of lifted 31" vehicles stuck on their pumpkins.
Lots of
rock on Billy Goats and the high country in general... Did Billy Goats in torrential rain 3 trips back and it was no different but picking the right lines is vital.
The rivers throughout the high country go up and down like yo-yo's. Noone can say for sure how they will be next week let alone month etc. Start watching the rainfall data and river heights a week before leaving and you should get a good idea what to expect.
Travis.

Travis, thanks for the
feedback. As mentioned we are looking at heading into the Woonangatta via Zeka Spur early april. My only concern is the rivers and getting through to
Dargo. Will call DSE and
check River heights prior to leaving.
As far as Billo Goat goes, how bad is it towards the top? Would it be better to head up to
Pinnacles via Mccarhy spur /
Junction Spur / Castlehill Track ?
Any
feedback on conditions would be appreciated.
Regards
