G'Day

After many years of faithfull service the old Forerunner with almost 500,000kms is having trouble towing the camper trailer.

Still a great bus but the wife is demanding something that does not get overtaken by people walking on the hills.

Have a budget of $40,000 which could be a 2nd hand hilux or patrol with 60,000kms on it, but looking at something I could own from new and keep for years to come.

Any body comment on the triton or the dmax, would be fitting dual batts, snorkel and canopy and would be using it off road (Why not it's the reason we get them - or it should be)

Any history or issues with either would be appreciated.

Thanks

Well they are both good vehicles, but I believe any Isuzu built vehicle to be a touch in front, and from experience at work seem to honour warranties better.Just curious what motor did you have in the runner. I had the 22r which was a great bus and is still running around but a bit slow towing to.

Have the 3L (2.8) with a turbo, starts first time everytime, never broken down, no smoke and been around oz twice both times towing.

Brilliant bus, but very slow - first gear on some of the hills, can recall around balingup in the south west almost reaching a stop.

It maybe worth waiting for the new ford ranger coming out, longer wider etc, and a 3.2 l
Diesel, anything with a bigger engine is better in my opinion!

We have many manual diesel Tritons at work & they have proven to be reliable & tow very well, in fact they have surprisingly been better overall than Hilux's of the same age. Offroad I think you'll find all the light utes very similar in ability these days.

Agreed but I find I have a numb backside in side 100ks in Tritons, seats leave a bit to be desired

as a qualified mechanic ,i did my time at mitsubishi,i would not buy a triton,i own a 2007 rodeo ,common rail type,its a rebadged demax,the new dmax and colorado would be my pick for a new car,pretty much the same car ,same engine gearbox,same specs etc, depending on who gives the best deal as to which way to go,,,,for a good allrounder it will need a 50 mm lift,(new rear springs and torsion bars wound up and fitted with a quality set of shocks}
the triton has a few issues, that in my experience stop it from being a reliable remote area vehicle,,,,,,triton lovers will disagree, but this is my opinion

"the triton has a few issues"
Ed would you like to expand on what the issues are with the current model Triton range?
Cheers Craig.....................

I'm with you Crackles, as a 2009 Triton owner who is VERY happy with his purchase I'd like some qualification to the "issues" statement as well.

knocking in the engine due to computer playing with the settings, needing constant resetting of the computer ,
detonation due to overfueling,
clutch shudder
driveline vibrations
people complaining about fuel consumption
unable to confidently tackle water crossings due to gearbox 4wd switching box playing up with water ingress, causing the vehicle to go back into 2wd
exhaust gas recirculating valves EGR valves blocking up and needing manifold and valve replacement,
as i said this is my opinion and i do a lot of self sufficient remote area touring and i would not personally buy one,if you like them please dont let me stop you from buying one,
this is what forums are for ,peoples thoughts and opinions
i no longer work for mitsubishi and i hope these issues have been sorted by mma
like i said the triton lovers out there will disagree with me,but i was in the position to see the problem vehicles,im sure there are a lot of tritons out there without problems, but for the ones with issues i hope mma has improved the customer support for some issues, owners were being told that some of these problems were acceptable and not doing anything about them.

We have them at our work and I have just parted company with my 07 ML Triton and gone Hilux. Some additional issues with the current model: No grunt off the mark - usually ride clutch or stall, diff leaks, Mitso cant fix computer mapping so kangaroos eveywhere, steering colomns need contiual replacement ( even mine had 6 but they still cant fix ), manifolds carboning up causing all sorts of issues, blue tooth extremely bad to the extent we had to buy aftermarket - and thats just what I can think of. It is a good ute if they could just fix the issues they have had for years that didnt go away between the ML to MN

Naturally I am biased hahahaha...but two things stick out in favour of the Isuzu, I believe the chassis is the best in the business and the 4JJ1 3.0 litre motors would also be my pick as it is also used in their 2 Tonne Truck.

PS they are well priced at the moment to, LSU manual (top of the line) $38,990 drive away

Those LSU's look awesome too! a bit pretty, but give the Hilux a run for its money in the "looks tough" department.

is the 4jj1 Motor the 3.0l CRD?

The d-max just need a lift (as stated) they make up for the low clearance by having protection plates everywhere underneath, but ultimately a 50mm lift would be better.

I have a 03 Rodeo so not really comparaeable to the new dmax's but still, i love it! great on the beach, great on fuel and the isuzu motor just screams reliability. Id buy a new LSU tomorrow if i had the $$, but i dont so i will just wash my Rodeo and pretend its new!

Hi Doey, they are all CRDs these days.......would have one myself if I had the $s to mate, but I still love the two we have so that helps. I have a feeling there may be a new model in the wings.

what i meant, was the 4jj1 the standard 3.0l crd motor that comes with them, or is there another engine available in diesel for the new dmax's? sorry
