If you have ever thought about heading over the horizon in your own vehicle, on another continent, you may be interested in our journey.

We have a daughter living in Milan, Italy. We drove there to visit her, believe it or not! Twelve months ago we arrived home, it took us 7 months, 38,000km, this is our story on Exploroz:

Thanks for sharing your story, I enjoyed looking at some of your blogs and when I have more time I'll come back for a detailed read.

I've traveled through a lot of that part of the world, mostly over land using public transport, I did look into driving once but I could not get anyone to insure me so I quickly binned the idea,

Do you mind telling me who insured you and what type of insurance you had? I would have to guess that what ever you purchased wasn't cheap,

Thanks again for taking the time to put all that together, I have no doubt that many will find it fascinating,

Cheers,
Dustin

Dustin, the only insurance normally available is third party injury, incase you hurt someone else. This type of insurance is usually mandatory before you enter any country, usually available at the border and is dependant upon the period of time you will be in the country, not usually expensive.

I believe comprehensive vehicle insurance on your own vehicle is not possible. You must carry the risk. By having a relatively inexpensive vehicle cuts your exposure.

There is the possibility that your vehicle is stollen, which did happen to a couple we know. They were in Siberia, in a town on Lake Baikal, the vehicle was stollen by the Russian Maffia. After about one month the Maffia contacted them and offered to sell the car back for $US8,000, they accepted and went on their way. They did have a moderately expensive vehicle though.

One good web site for overland travellers and travel planners is horizonsunlimited.com mainly a motorcycle site but also applies to vehicle based travel overland.

Cheers

I'm having problem finding the story.

My brother drove from Switzerland to Australia http://www.northcape-sydney.ch/route.php in his 1982 Mercedes station wagon.
POWERED by used deep fry oil which he would collect along the way.
I admire you people.
Well done
JS.

PradoMad,

Copy the following into the address panel at the top of your browser page, this should take you there

Another way is to go to Blogs at the top of the Exploroz page and search using "Chris D (Newcastle)" or just search using "Russia"
