LC100 Auto, 4speed v 5speed

Hi,

I keep reading on this forum and others that when choosing, make sure you

get the 5 speed box because it is better. I continually read the 5 speed is

smoother. Is this the only benefit?. Does the extra gear make alot of

difference?. I have the 4 speed and have towed a 2800kg van for 40000kms

and now tow a 2900kg van. When not vanning I am towing a tandem box

trailer daily that is anywhere from 1 tonne to 2 tonne depending on the day

and i hae done that for about 50000kms. The 4 speed although can seem

harsh sometimes, has never let me down. My thinking is, it must be a good

strong box. I would recommend the 4 speed to anyone. I have not driven the

5speed. It seems alot of people make this judgement without ever driving

either. Can someone please clarify the differences please and the benefits of a

5 speed over a 4speed if any?.

There is more than one, thats why I asked

For instance I have a 2005 with a 1HD-FTE which has the 5 speed

Advantages Ratios are closer together gives better fuel consumption than 4sp

which is usually with the poverty pack and the 1HZ

Only thing is its not wise to pull a van as heavy as that in 5th gear and 3rd in the 4sp is a bit low geared to do the equiv.

Mine is 2002 GXL not poverty pack. It is only in better than ideal conditions I

will tow in overdrive, as in tailwinds and downhill and even then, most times I

will stay in 3rd.My 4speed does approximately 2600 revs at 95-100kms in 3rd

gear. But i like to tow around 2400rpm which is at 90kms or just below. How

does your 5speed compare?. My fuel consumption towing 2800kg van is on

average around 17.5litres to 100kms. How does that compare with the

5speed?.

The 5 sp at 90 is at 2200-2300 and does about the same fuel figures.

My van weighs the same

Graham - I see 1950rpm at 100kph in 5th. Are your figures from 4th (in 5 speed auto box) ?

Hi David,
I also have the 4 speed auto albeit in an 80 series 1HD FT.

There are often occasions when I feel another gear would be just that little bit better as far as gear selection/road speed goes. This is why I recommend anyone buying, who has the choice, go for the 5 speed auto which was only available in the 100 series from mid to late 2002 onwards and is available in most models of 100 series except the base models as far as I know.

As I said in another response about a week ago the more gears the better for towing. That is why most trucks have so many gears.

From all that I have read and heard both the 4 speed auto and the 5 speed auto are strong boxes. I have heard nothing negative about either unlike the manuals fitted to some landcruisers that have had some failures.

Hi Bruce,

That is interesting. I have never felt like I needed an extra gear, just driven

the car with what it's got and not thought otherwise. Maybe if i had the 5

speed first i may have noticed the need for the extra gear. ??.

Hi David,

Just sometimes I feel the need for an extra gear. But then as some of the mechanics have said we drive by the seat of our pants, and every other sensory device we have. It's just that some times the revs are a little high in one gear and a little too low in another. More gears are definitely the answer otherwise they would not put so many in a formula one race car nor would they put so many in a truck. It is all about keeping the engine on the sweet spot. Which is were they perform their best work without being flogged.

hi David I have a 100series v8 5spd auto ( i quoted 5spd is better) its when im 4wding that i find the auto good ,to be able to keep pulling back through gear when it get hard going ,much better than 4spd
on the road i dont know if it make much differance bit over 2000rev 100ks
& im 1eyed misty person but luv this car

Thanks Nick, That would make sense. I was struggling to see the difference

as when towing they are both getteing very similar consuption figures, TD

models anyway. I dont do much full offroad driving so would not know the

difference in that applicationbut again, it would seem tomake sense.
