Your pretty right to carry as long as fully licensed and permitted. Hi powered can come under scrutiny in different states and some areas (parks etc) it's prohibited to carry any firearms (including Bows) and have to be left at police station.
That was the go a few years back ................. but things do change. Your best to ring the police station in the area you are going and they will usually be able to tell you the rules and regs.

As far as I know you have to go to the nearest police station when you enter a state or territory that your firearms are not registered in. There you get a temporary permit for your firearms that covers you whilst there. And so on with each state or territory.

Don't trust me though it would pay to ring ahead, and have a very good reason for wanting to take your firearms with you.

In these anti firearms times "I may see something I want to shoot" or "For protection" may see you knocked back.

Remember
Life is short, Break the rules, Forgive quickly, Kiss slowly, Love truly,
Laugh uncontrollably, And never regret anything that made you smile

Spot on with all that advice GOF.

Really Matt, about the only valid reason for a traveller to have firearms (which must be kept in a locked and secured place same as when at home) is if you are travelling interstate to a gun club competition. There may be other reasons that will pass, and all the states are different.

Grumpy

That is the correct call, but it will still pay to do your homework, with your District Firearms Officer.

I go on an Interstate hunitng trip every year, and have never had a problem.

Thanks for replies Bucky. What are the requirements for security of your firearms in transit and do these vary in the different states?

I do my own thing when it comes to the security of my Rifles, and have certainly gone a bit overboard. Have been pulled over 2 times for random checks, and of course the inevitable question ... "Are you carrying any firearms ? "

Yes is the reply !

and then proceed to show mr Plod, my setup. it impresses them.

I have a home made 3 mm thick gav steel gun safe, measurinig 500mm X 300mm and 1200 wide, and is bolted to the rear seat anchor points.
There 2 bright steel pins coming through the lid, and 2 heafty padlocks, used through the pins. Tho whole thing is covered in carpet and is almost impossible to see from outside the Patrol.
Rifles are packed in and separated with foam rubber to avoid upsetting the sights.

Bolts are usually hidden in the tool Box and ammo is packed in old army surplus boxes.

Relevant paperwork is packed in the glovebox.

All good, too

The gunsafe also acts as a storage safe for cameras, cash and valuable items if needed on our travels.

Cheers
Bucky

As far as I know u have 3 months all locked up as usual as u travel and it is polite to contact the local blue coats that ur carrying firearms and that u are travelling through. Always seak permisson from landholders to do any shooting, it's kinda scarey out here when people don't know where u are working and they are taking potshots. There is a tourist operator who thinks it's just great stuff maybe next time he passess through he should hear a whistle through his ears and go oops sorry didn't know u where there.

All States/Territories (except WA ) recognise interstate firearms licences
If your travelling from WA to another State there is
no need/requirement for you to notify the police.
They have enough to deal with without trying to record the movement
of Licensed firearm owners movements.I travel Interstate at least once a year
to compete in competitions and don't have a problem,Unlike those who
come to Western Australia. As yet we don't have workable National firearm laws

thankfully here in WA our pistol requirements are far less onerous than other states

I dont use my free pistol much and in SA it would have been taken offme

not to mention my rapid fire pistol I was able to elect not to hand it in and recently bought a heap of cheap ammo for it

No I am not going to Google it I am not going to search it for you, you can do it your self, and if you can't then you should not own a gun in the first place.

Why be so rude?

If you think this why not just leave no comment?

It just requires good manners.

Maybe because it is a serious subject that the answer shouldn't be decided by a bunch of armchair lawyers.
The OP should make a phone call to the relevant authority.
Gun owners should know the laws, as drivers should know the road rules!

I'm with you Steve, it's rude. There are more polite ways of putting your point forward. Its this kind of response that turns people away.

People have forgotten how to be polite yet it costs so little and delivers so much.

You weren't asked to google anything, pull your head in. See you're not the only one who can be rude on the other side of a keyboard. Are you this socially challenged face to face?

If there is a good reason why I don't become a paid up member of this site, its answers like yours, that and the excessive (in my view) moderation.

Shaker, come on. Do YOU know all the road rules? I am a responsible firearms user and a road user, but I don't reckon i would know even 75% of the road or firearm laws. Particularly interstate laws.

Morning Matt,

If you look at the NSW Police web page - link below, it gives details for all the various states firearms registries. An email to whichever state you are headed to should provide the answer. I travel interstate regularly for both shotgun and handgun comp's and as already said elsewhere, apart from WA, youdon't need to do anything apart from obviously keeping the firearms / ammo safely locked when not being used (ammo in separate compartment of course)

Cheers

Might I suggest that if you dont understand the "Mumbo Jumbo" you ring and ask

the relevant authority and get the absolute truth.

Asking for information on legalities on here is fraught with danger.

You will get lots of opinions, some good some not so good.

Saying to an officer when he pulls you up "Well they said on the forum...........

Wont quite cut the mustard I would think.

Matt,
As mentioned above an email or phone call to the relevant states firearms registry office will give you the info you seek. Google the required states firearms registry.
As to Unified National gun laws you're joking aren't you?
We've all been taxed a billion dollars, not one state has the same laws and the crims seem to ignore them anyway. But it has successfully entrenched yet another level of embuggerance on the law abiding and employed a lot more paper shufflers with their nose in the public purse.

Go to your local District Firearms Officer.

Or you may try the Sporting Shooters Association of Australia
