I was a bit bored the other day at work and have always thought I would get the fuel consumption for my old and faithful underground ute that is starting to show her age.

Have always refilled at about 130k on the speedo with either the 1HZ or the V8 utes, most of the time the fuel gauges don't work or are inaccurate due to the amount of vibration or corrosion.

If we are filling a large machine we radio through the amount but with utes we just fill them at the underground fuel bay and never take the amount used.

Well I know old petal is getting a bit long in the tooth but the amount of fuel floored me, she comes in somewhere between an roadtrain and a b double in the fuel usage stakes.

Here are the figures. 130k and 84 litres or about 1.55 kilometres to the litre and 64 litres per 100k.

I think I will need to have my right foot removed with these consumption figures. In the next couple of weeks I must grab a V8 at test it's figures.

hi rockape
are you sure the tanks not leaking or some one isn't milking it

find those figures a bit hard to except
surely all that fuel cant be going through the engine ????
what's coming out the exhaust near pure fuel ??
cheers might be cheaper to bury it lol

Mazcan,
the old girl is not leaving any puddles on the ground but I am not game to crawl under her incase the chassis collapses.

I will check the fuel again using the front tank only and see what that gives.

No one steals the fuel because it is a remote site and it is easy just to fuel up at the bowsers.

I always have her sitting on just over 3000 revs 3rd gear low range.

As I said will rerun the figures and also take the figures of a V8, well the best 8 that is, ours, because the other one has had an engine change out of a troopy or a 70 series shorty making a slug, miss matched computor I think.

The old girl has out lasted about 6 V8's to date, they are already in the tip.

Have a good one.

G'day Rockape,
Yep, you are right when you say the fuel consumption is about the same as a road train, we were at Stuarts Well last year and we were talking to a road train driver, and fuel consumption came up in the conversation, when loaded they do 700 meters to the litre.
Cheers

Rockape

My Brothers does about 15lt/100km normally - but forget that , I love it when someone has figures that make my petrol patrols 17lt/100km look good.

Over long weekend coming I'm going to dessert with measuring jug and will accurately measure my cars consumption in the sand , its going to be nasty , but nowhere near 64lt/100km (I hope - and if it is I won't tell anyone anyway.)

Robin,
you can feel good about your consumption, we had 100 series wagons with 1HZ engines and a couple of time people going to the Isa and back ran out of fuel, distance 600K and 120 litres of fuel. Guess they were sticking to the speed limit Ha Ha. The vehicles were empty and would have been two up so not much weight, 400k flat country and 200k hilly.

Have a good one

Hi Rockape,
Those figures would have been mainly low gear work would they not.

The mine you work in is it underground or an open pit.

Cheers, Bruce.

how long would the engine be running to get 130k ?. A lot longer than 130k on a highway I would reckon!

do you still have both tanks?

84l is pretty much emptying one tank

the one time I tried to work out how much fuel our underground ute used i worked out about 30l per 100 which sounds more like it

get outmore,
still have both tanks and I filled both at the same time, then ran on the back one, nightshift changed to the front tank but didn't reset the trip meter. I will retest the ute and see what happens, it may have a leak but it is not showing up with puddles or diesel on the rear of the chassis, it went in for service and they didn't say anything about a leak.

This ute still has plenty of poke and I havn't noticed any smoke, reversing flat bickie I still don't see any smoke.

Have a good one

Actually ive used up 90l in about 400m

Id just filled up and was driving the causway between 2 sites (one was on an island in a salt lake)

the grader had been grading the causway and left a windrow - not too high

i was cruising one side of it but it moved over too close to the edge so i went to jump the windrow
- Too late I saw a big rock as i was straddling the windrow BANG

I then watched as the rear tank emptied within about a minute due to being sliced one end to the other
