We are taking the camper up to Fraser Island in April and I have promised the kids a stop over at one of the Gold Coast Theme Parks on the way home...(what was I thinking).. Does anyone know any camping areas or van parks in the area that wont cost me my first born to stay there for 1night......

Thanks

Hi Lou-r ,
we have school holidays 15 april till 26 april up here so van parks may be full.
theme parks will be crowded and cost more than your first born to enter and more if they eat there ( some allow picnics check web sites ).
we stayed at big 4 tweed billabong in sept 2010 school hols was clean & tidy but under cooloongatta airport landing path, a bit LOUD at times, theme parks about 30/40 mins drive but they dont open till 10.00 ( i think )

on fraser go to champagne pools at hi tide ,its worth climbing down the stairs

cheers

Hi beergutz

Thanks for taking the time to answer .....We have a wedding in Rockhampton on the 16th and then heading off to Fraser, so dates can't really be changed would be nice to avoid the crowds though.

We are staying at Dundubara Campground for the first few days then moving to Central Station ..any hints and tips would be very welcome.

Champagne pools is on the to do list. I would like to go to Sandy Cape from everything ive read it sounds barely accessible is this right?

And (sorry for bombarding you with questions) ....Do you know the driving time from the barge at Kingfisher Bay to Dundubara?

Cheers
Lou

no idea about sandy cape, but just found brochure 'survive your drive on fraser island ' printed 09 it lists track condition report site ' www.derm.qld.gov.au/fraser ' may be worth a look (i have not looked yet )
we went in sept 06 and drive details are a bit sketchy in memory ,i think about 90mins.
eli creek runs to ocean and is abit deep after hi tide till backed up water escapes , drove past a crowd of people playing in the fast flowing water but could not stop & join in , next time !
being a touristy island every thing is more $$ i paid $1.85 /ltr petrol, milk was almost double price but i think bakery at eurong was reasonable
sorry but it was 4.5 yrs ago and minor sort of details have faded.
if weather is good you wont want to go home
cheers

Hi lou_R
should allow approx 2 hrs from the barge to Dundubara, my own PERSONAL place to camp up wouldn't be Central Station, mozzies/sand flies, nothing much for kids, but in saying that very nice for a day trip visit & lunch, I understand that Sandy Cape can only be done on a Tag-along style with a ranger, but thats only what i have been told, we always camp between Eurong & Happy Valley, that seems to be central to most of the Island, & only 10-15 mins from Eli creek pure fresh clean water for an end of day dip, kids will love going down Eli on boggie boards & only 1/2 to 1 mt deep all the way, millions{well nearly} of pack packers from around the world, & some of the best Swimmers iv'e seen on a body??????{female body that is}.
Lake Wobby is also a great lake, do take notice of "shallow water" signs, MANY MANY times people have dived into lake & end up with broken back/necks.
Also a thing to remember, NEVER leave anything outside your tent/trailer/van when you leave for the day that will attract dingoes, all esky's MUST be straped up, no food at any time{even cans} todays dingoes are very cleaver at opening cans and esky's, not only that the "FUN POLICE" {rangers} will take a photo and use it for evedence against you, if you go to Lake Mckenzie NO food is to be taken to the forshore any more, just a bottle water, OR they will get you{not the dingoes the FUN POLICE !!!!!!. But all in all a graet place to holiday and good fun for the kids
hope that helped a little

Thanks guys lots of great information there ....wow 2hrs from the barge to Dundubara I was way off :)

Really looking forward to my stay on Fraser Island. I will make sure I do the right thing would hate to get a visit from the Fun Police !!!!!.

Redbacks: the camping you mention are these prebooked or do you just find available spots in the designated area I like the sound of the Happy Valley area sounds better than Central Station not big on mozzies/sandflies etc....The website beergutz mentioned is excellent but only shows the campgrounds like Dundubara/Central Station/Waddy Point etc. I cant seem to find much on the other sites.

Thanks again

Cheers
Lou

Hi Lou,
I now believe that you have to book an "area" on a first in best dressed site, the area's all have different names, Qld Gov web site should show this, but i would try rangers office at Rainbow beach, they would help you with any more info, last time we was on Frazer was last September & things was just changing then,my brother has just come back from Frazer two weeks ago, I'll ask him for more details he camped at Happy Valley as we have down for 20 odd years now.

Cheers

Try the Broadwater Caravan park at Southport. A huge park run by the Surfers City Council

A lovely park with beautiful views and great facilities Also close to shopping and easy access north to the theme parks.

You can google it they have about 4 parks along the strip
