G'day. I'm hoping to get a 2004 dual cab 3 litre turbo diesel 4x4 Hilux and am looking at one with 200,000km on the clock. Could the Hilux experts please let me know what sort of specific things I need to keep a watch for in this model at this km in terms of engine and drive train.
Thanks for the help. poitr

To be honest i cant think of much.Make sure the belt has been changed (cannot think of the name bugger it,its like a cam chain but belt)...Sure it comes on around 150k.

Change oil and filter every 5k..I use Penrite 15w-50 Synthetic.

Fuel pump every 10k and air cleaner depending how much bush driving u do,If alot do it when needed.Check after every trip if dusty..
Dont blow it out with air if really bad, replace it.

Here is some stuff i have done in my Hilux..

You will love it.

Me thinks River Swaggie might be thinking of the timing belt.
Cheers

Thats the one Baz (cheers,Mental block lol)..

Poitr

I use Mickey Thompson MTZ's on 31's on original rim's..They have taken me everywhere i needed to go.

If you are going to take it 4wdriving through rivers etc.The first thing i would do is sort out diff breathers (Piranha sell them).Dont forget your transfer case as well as the diffs. The original ones that will be on it are of poor quality and dont trust them.

Secondly i would get a snorkel (I hav Safari and are very happy quality wise). The air filter has a rubber grommit in it,remove and silicone it up.

Sort out your own recovery gear,ARB have a nice bag, well the contents are great the actual bag is crap quality.

If you want some info ask anytime at riverswaggie at gmail dot com

P.S Yeah if i had the the Kaymar Rear Bar then i wouldnt have floated..

River Swaggie is on the money, timing belt at 150,000, service history and then get an independent test if you like. Low KM's well looked after and you should be fine.

Swaggie,
Realise this is pretty ignorant but I'm fairly new to this. What are the diff and transfer case breathers ? Are these complicated to replace?
Thanks

Hiya Poitr

This will explain it better...On your diffs and transfer case Toyota have an end cap.To allow these parts too breath, now if you are crossing a river and they decide to breath they will suck water into the diffs etc etc, they are made very cheap with a bleep ty spring in them...What you do is put the lines up under your bonnet...

Its not hard, just use a screwdriver to lift the original caps off,The transfer case is harder between the floor and case..Now for the rear diff allow hose for travel,Suspension up and down...

Or get a mechanic to do the three..I used a T piece for front and transfer case connection.

Piranha

If i was to do mine again i would use these fancy ones

See if you can find out whether there's been any rear wheel bearing seal problems. I'm on to the 4th set on the drivers side in only 60k. No problem other side.

Check to see if injectors have been done. Usually due around 200000ks. If its a d4d that could be $4000.
