Diesel 'n Dust
Morning all,
Picked up my new work ute yesterday (2010 VDJ79) and had noticed that an 'Emergency Start' button is located just behind wiper stick. I think positioned where the Diff Locker switch would be. I had spoken to my boss about other Dual Battery Systems (Piranha and others) but was told it only to be was fitted with this 'Emergency Start' button.
I thought that these 'push starts' weren't good for EFI vehicles. I had heard that spiking was an issue. Say if it did spike the ECU I would be up creek without a paddle, in some of the
places I work. And just look at all the electrics in the engine bay!!! I had a few years ago used this system on a HZJ79 and it was fine.
On my personal ute (HDJ79) I fitted a Piranha Dual system (DBE180S+) and it works a treat!! It mentions anti spiking and it just 'talks' with each battery. But I have installed better batteries in my system. No button it just plods along effortlessly.

But again I could be totally wrong as my auto sparky knowledge is woeful.
Thanks Matthew

Sorry brain dead this morning, went fishing and no fish. A missus thats cranky with me.
Whats the emergency start for. Is that just in case the main battery dies and it uses the second battery to start car???

What is it connected to ?
There should be an isolator under the bonnet and the push button simply activates it, that isolator may have spike protection.
Do you hear something click when you push it ? (you may need to leave the headlights on for a while so the isolator under the bonnet switches off so you can hear it click)
Regards
Derek from ABR

Derek,
I haven't tried it yet. I briefly looked under the bonnet but I wasn't looking for an isolator. I will later. With my woeful knowledge of auto electrics I can't see me getting very far.
thanks

I have one, fitted to a troopy V8, actuating a redarc solenoid - no problems.
If you have any doubts, try yours a few times in town - don't wait for the emergency in the bush.

Matthew,
I can't even try to remember how many V8 utes I have started with another ute or jump pack. None of them have ever suffered any ill affects from it. I would estimate at least 1 ute a day is started this way.
A lot of our batteries go flat from utes sitting to long with flashing lights and parkers on, from short running or someone lost one and no one missed it, often see on parked up in the darkness somewhere.
Have a good one.
