Hi Deb,
Motherhen is right. Dont try to plan too much. There will be many things that you find as you go along that wont be in any plan you draw up at
home.
If you have just a broad outline of your main route and a rough
breakdown of the time you allocate to each main area you will have the flexibility to explore areas according to the info that you gather as you travel. Talk to lots of other travellers, they are only too happy to tell you about road conditions, things to see and do, good
places to
camp etc. That way you have up-to-date local info which is much better than guide books and trip planners.
You wont see it all, but its better to take your time and really let all the new experiences soak in. There are some
places where there is just so much stunning scenery etc that it can be a bit overwhelming if you try to take it in too fast.
There is a stack of info on this site. Using that plus a map of Oz and a decent road atlas is all you need to point you in the right direction.
Above all dont rush and have a great trip.
Cheers,
Val
