We would like to take our 4WD and offroad caravan to Lake Eyre from Adelaide and ending up at Coober Pedy. Would it be advisable at the moment?

Hi Brian and Sandra,

from the SA Govt Roads Website:

PUBLIC ACCESS ROUTE (PAR) INFORMATION
Halligan Bay Track PAR to Lake Eyre - CLOSED due to rain
Level Post Bay Track PAR to Lake Eyre - CLOSED due to rain

Trailers and Caravans aren't recommended on these.

From 08.03 the Track conditions on Exploreoz have them opened to 4WD.Here I'd be calling Maree or Oodnadatta to check. Either way it's going to be wet. Lake Eyre South has a maximum depth of 2.5m at the moment so it would be good viewing from the Oodnadatta Track without having to drag your van all the way to Lake Eyre North in questionable road conditions. Some reports are calling LE Sth FULL!!!

My 2 cents anyway. All the best with your trip.

I wouldn't do it.

As far as the weather goes, there are thunderstorms forecast for the next 4 days: BOM forecasts. And March is a crappy time to go because of the heat and the flies and safety issues for solo travellers.

As far as the roads go, its 4wd only from Marree to William Creek and William Ck to Coober pedy is closed because of the recent deluge.Road report.

And why would you bother seeing lake Eyre at the moment - no water is visible from either of the vantage points. The only way you'll see water is from the air.

Cheers
Phil

TJ beat me to it!
I hadn't realised Lake Eyre South was listed by LEYC as "Full" - but it has to be really full to see water from Oodnadatta track, so it would be nice to hear from anyone who's been out there recently and seen water.

Cheers
Phil

Hi Phil,
it needs bugger all in it to see it from The Oodnadatta Track. I was there in July last year and there was plenty to see. It was nowhere near full. When I went past in 1989 it had water to see as well.

"Full" is a very big statement. If it was truely full it would possibly flow into Lake Eyre North as it has before. You'll find that the South often has water when the North doesn't. I don't get why everyone wants to trek all the way out to LE Nth like they did last year and see very little after all the effort. I met several very dissapointed people who were surprised to see the water in LE Sth after their fruitless trips to the Nth.

Thanks TJ,
I tend to forget that Lake Eyre North and South are pretty much independant of one another with Nth filling from rivers and Sth filling from local rain. And they've had a lot of local rain recently!
Cheers

Hi all. Re water in Lake Eyre (South). I have seen it from the Oodnadatta Tk at 0.5 m in 2005 so at 2.5m it will be even more impressive. Click on blue writing for pix in Places. Since the track is really more like a 2WD dirt road once this flood damage is repaired this is the easiest option to see salt and sky. We have been to LEN on an overcast day so the colours are far more muted. The road/track called Muloorina to Level Post Bay Track will allow a 5 hour return trip from Maree .Click for pix..... W

Link to Lake Eyre ( South) should have had all 3 words in blue. So the slow way to do it is to type them into Search box in Places..............W
PS the so called update from National Parks is 2 months out of date..............

I clicked on the link in your post earlier in the thread and it's dated 12th January but who's quibbling. At least all this rain is causing the roads to be regraded ready for the tourist onslaught. IMO it's too hot out there now and it won't be cool enough until Easter which is one of the latest ever this year..........W
