Best Off Road
A brand new 200 diesel and a 1992 Disco 1 V8 Petrol.
Firstly the 200. That thing sure has some lift for such a behemoth and I can see it as a wonderful tow vehicle for a very large van or boat. Turbo lag under about 2200 rpm was somewhat disconcerting though. It gave the impression that it would need to be kept "on the boil" if towing in hilly terrain.
The Old Disco 1. A 1992 Manual V8 Petrol with 464,000 on it. That old V8 has all the right sounds, the chassis twist under full throttle is quite involving and you feel like you're going fast. Of course you're not really, but it was a fun drive. Pretty much everything worked properly in the Old Girl and the doors still closed with a solid clunk. Gave me a new perspective on Land Rovers.

It's interesting you say the cruiser has turbo lag, I read a review of the diesel V8 Ute with the single turbo towing a 2 tonne van a while back and they reckoned it wouldn't pull the skin off a custard.
With all the good reports I wonder if you and the other reviewer got a dud.

Thats not true as I witnessed a 70 Series Ute with full canopy and
tools towing a Ski Boat up the Black Spur, it took off up one of the hills like a freight train. The figures don't lie with that much torque low down they are all brilliant towing vehicles.

I only had a brief drive. They may
well have plenty of torque down low but it just didn't get up and go until the tacho hit 2200 rpm. Felt a bit like a WRX to drive.
My wife's car is an XR6 Turbo and you simply can't tell it's a turbo, there's massive torque from just about idle. I had expected a 4.5 V8 TD to be similar. I'm not saying it's a problem, it just drove differently to what I had expected.

Quote "They reckoned it wouldn't pull the skin off a custard" is ridiculous to say, not your comments yes, but laughable for everyone that knows anything about these vehicles.

I think this is the article you are referring to and yes Mark Allen certainly gives the 76 series a rotten review.
Overlander 76 Series Tow review
Manual vs Auto plays a huge part in towing in my opinion. If you want an easy drive whilst towing auto works better, I tow with an Auto TD Hilux and for a 3 Litre engine it is fantastic, albeit the auto & gear ratios deserve part of the credit.

Its a
well known fact that Jumbo of Best off Road only posts a thread after imbibing on the 'red grape cordial'.
This, including his one eyed view on politics and cars ( Ford man through & through) should be catalyst enough that makes one ignore his 'baiting' comments re the greatest 4x4 ever built, namely the 200 DTT, which by the way has as much turbo lag as a Redbull F1.
He does however build a very good set of drawers for the 200, of which I have a set.
Then again he might have had a heavy day in the glue booth at work before trying to compare ford against a magnificent 200 DTT. (LOL)

Ken you crazy old Coota,
Did you escape from the asylum again?
Now I'll cop the one eyed bit about my politics, but I have no allegiance to any brand of car. That I happen to own two Fords at the moment is pure chance. I previously had two Hyundais and prior to that many Holdens and Mitsubishi's. I've even owned a Lada.
I'm now strictly a cup of tea man Monday to Thursday; hard to believe but true.

Yes
well, I am only an interested bystander and I really wondered whether this was a true reflection of the two different versions of this V8 or perhaps the both reviewers had "Got a dud"
Obviously in real life they are a fantastic vehicle as lots of people on here will attest!

Bought a new 200 series after having discos and cruisers before .
Mine just clicked up 8000ks and its going like a rocket, even with my boat on the back or towing my camping trailer. Gets good fuel figures and if in select mode it cruises at 110kph and the motor is just ticking over , put the foot down and it goes like a rocket. I love it.

Jim,
I agree the 200 has a bit of a lag - but did you know it is not just the turbo
If you plant your foot, there is a limiter at work for the first few seconds. Without it, if you can imagine 650Nm of torque going instantly to the rear diff, something will give!
Which is why I disagree with your second comment of having to "keep it on the boil" in hilly terrain. In fact there is instant torque on tap in those conditions.
Cheers, (Yes biased I know but just sharing my view)

Like I said, it was only a brief drive and those who drive one regularly can give the full picture.
