Snokel Head Foam Filters

Don't do it, all it will do is restriced your air flow and make black smoke out the back if it is a diesel.

Hi I have a 4.2 diesel patrol and i run foam oil filters in the pre cleaner and main filter.

If you run a paper filter as your main i would not put a oil foam filter before it.

The oil in the foam over time does get sucked out and puts a oily film over all the insides of the of the system.

When i get into dusty conditions i turn the snorkel head to face the rear, which helps.

For older vehicles i swear by the foam oil filters, they are messy to service, but carrying a spare sleeve already oiled is easy to fit in dusty conditions, and easy to clean in warm soapy water.

I dont know what style of snorkel you currently have, but what about a cyclonic type?

This type will not get blocked (Dust is spun out of the slits on the top) and no moving parts. The work better with higher engine speeds as more air is being pulled through it.

Put a donaldson type pre-cleaner head on your snorkle. It will capture most of the dust, and simple to empty out when needed.

The best way is to keep out of the dust as much as possible. Done the CSR with both Pre-cleaner ie round bowl and straight air ram style. The pre-cleaner works well, and would be my choice.

I only use paper filters and give them a blow out every day in dusty condittions.

Foam filters with the sticky solution restricts air flow just like turning the snorkel head backward. Paper filters can be "tapped" to get dust & rubbish out or the use of an air compressor is also an option. A motor requires the correct amount of air to operate proficiently restricing the amount of air to the motor causes poor efficiency. IMHO

I have used them for years and believe they are very good. Not on the CSR, but the Cape and GRR etc.

I used to work for the foam manufactuer (Dunlop). Remember there is foam and there is foam. Air Filter foam is called "ME" and will have a numbr after it. So for a air filter it will be "ME10" There bigger the number the bigger the "holes" in the foam. It is almost always black but there is a blue one that looks almost the same. This is generally used for filtering water where there are fish involved. ME will kill fish.

I hope we are not talking about using mattress foam as a filter. You can get ME from Clarke Rubber or a good foam specialist.
