A map of Fraser Island would be handy.

I need a little help. I have looked on the net but can't find a map showing the tracks on Fraser Island.

We are going over for the day on Saturday and it appears you cannot get the vehicle permit and pack until the Rangers office at Rainbow Beach opens at 0800 hrs.

This would put us on the island at not an ideal time for the tides.

We haven't been on the island for around 25 years and I can't remember if there is an inland track we can use to avoid the beach until the tide is suitable.

Can anyone tell me where to look on the net for a suitable map.

Thanks

Hi Boo Boo,

Your location says NSW however if your going to be at Fraser by early Sat morning I assume you'll already be in SEQ on Friday. If thats the case then perhaps you could get to the EPA office in Brisbane on Ann St. Its been a couple of years since I last went in there but as far as I am aware they issue permits over the counter, including Fraser.

They may have a map available but to be honest i think you will probably be best off buying a paper copy. The servo's in Rainbow Beach should have them.

If you ask they will leave your permits in the collection box at the front of their office in Rainbow Beach so you can pick them up earlier.

The inland "track" (more like corrugated nightmare) runs from the barge drop off up to about 5K short of Dilli Village. Don't attempt Hook Point any more than 2 hours either side of low tide.

There is a basic map here.

You're better off buying a proper map when you pick up your permit, or at the local servo.

If you haven't been to Fraser Island for 25 years, the first thing you will notice is that many of the old forestry tracks have been closed to vehicle access.

have a great trip!

Here is a map from Parks:
Fraser Island Parks Map

Plus a lot of info I found helpful on my visits:
Fraser Island Road Conditions etc

Or just grab a hema map at one of the many servos on the way. The big BP's just north of Caboolture have a big range.

Thanks fellas

I'll pick up a map on the way and give the ranger station a ring in a few minutes.

Your help has given me a bit of a head start and the maps were very helpful.

Hey Boo Boo, Don't worry about the Ranger's Office....... you can buy your permit on the barge. I never get it from the Ranger. Get a Hema map at any servo north of Brisbane.

If you buy your barge ticket (white barge only) from the Shell servo in Rainbow Beach you will get a discount on fuel.

Tide times for Sat 9 April are:
0541hrs -- Low @ 0.91m
1113hrs -- High @ 1.3m
1649hrs -- Low @ 0.75m

The barges operate from 6.30am to 5.15pm at this time of year so those times suit ideally for a day-trip if you can be there at 6.30am.
Not a good idea to try and get around Hook Point (soon after coming off the barge) two hours either side of low tide. Watch others coming off the barge and follow them. Otherwise take the inland track near the barge landing point and access the beach at the first exit at about 12km.

Weather should be good with only a shower or two.
Have a great day.

Cheers
Allan

Thanks Allan

I found the tide info, but the barge and other info I didn't know, but it will be very handy.

I have paid for the permit over the telephone and the 'packs' with blank permits are always out the front of the office at rainbow beach so I'll be able to get an early start to get within the two hour window for the tide.

I just have to remember to write the permit number on the permit.

The last time we were on the island there was a really bad storm late in the afternoon. It collapsed our tent and rolled the BBQ and gas bottle about 30 mtrs.

Many people left the island minus their tents and other bits and pieces.

The dog, 4 adults and 2 babies slept in the Tercel that night. (We left the inlaws corolla on the mainland for the 4 days.)

We looked like a bunch of rejects from a $2 shop when we got off the island next day and finally got a room in the Highlander (I think) motel in Warwick that night.

Boo Boo, I was just looking at the NP CONDITION REPORT for Fraser Island and there are some places along the beach where access is restricted due to tides more so than usual, as below:
Hook Point -- 1 hr either side of low tide.
Eurong, Dundubara, Eli Creek -- 2 hrs
May affect your day planning.

Thanks Allan

Hmmmm, probably not the best day to go over for just the day with the tides, but thems the breaks.

Thanks for the additional info.

You could still have a good visit. There are by-passes at Eurong and Happy Valley and you can use the inland tracks to visit the lakes and Central Station.
On the island, check for the latest advice at the QWPS Information Centre at Eurong.

After looking at the above maps and tides I was going to go along the inland track, then beach then inland, then come back to the beach then then inland , then beach etc That way I can minimise the beach use until later.

My wife Frances, definitely wants to see the hidden city if you can still get to it, anyway we'll soon find out.

Hidden City?? There are dozens of Hidden Cities all over Australia but I don't know of one on Fraser Island. There is a Hidden Lake, about 7km walk in from the Northern Road. Perhaps Frances has the name wrong?
