I'm looking at a ute to setup for touring. Currently I'm a bit keen on the latest Club Cab Mitsubishi Triton.

On paper it's a pretty good vehicle and is the pick of the bunch when it comes to value for money.

Whatever I choose will also be my daily driver so it needs to be, well, daily drivable.

I'm interested to hear from anyone who's had/has one etc etc.

I would do some research into the bending of the rear chassis behind the rear spring mount especially if you are going to load the tub up and/or tow a decent weight. There has been some reports of this happening.

Does the 5 Year Mitsubishi Warranty cover this..? I have read reports of the rear chassis issue however the vehicles had been modified and warranty refused.? Correct me if I am wrong, just going by a very vague memory.!

All warranty has been declined due to suspension upgrades as the vehicle has been modified. I was going to buy one but I am having second thoughts as I tow a camper trailer, not a heavy one but still. I am looking at the VW Amarok or possibly a pajero. I have to submit that one day the 80 series will have to go.

Hasn't it been only when airbags have been added?
Would this also effect other makes that are leaf spring.
Has the same happened to Tritons if extra leafs have been added?

There has been one instance of this and it was fitted with a camper that had a lot of weight behind the axle and had airbags. There have also been instances of Navara's doing it and many GU Patrols.

All our 1t utes including Triton have had an extra leaf added from new. No issue with warranty on any of the brands.

Picked mine up ten days ago, company supplied,so far fuel is about 10km/litre (only used two tanks) Automatic.cruise control and auto gearbox fantastic fairly small tank, estimated range around 700km,accellerates well,130km/hr easy to attail, suspension soft lots of front end diving under brakes,i have canopy fitted poor sealing around tailgate, huge overhang from rear axel, poor ramp over angle, that said it does what its designed to do very well,it will not ,nor is it designed to go where a patrol will go.

Nick, as said it wont go where a patrol will go, hands down the patrol will win due to coil sprung live axle front and back, ground clearance, and this is before you lift the patrol and add lockers (best standard LSD in the business). over hang front and back on the triton is a killer especially the rear and more so if you have a towbar. They were not built like a patrol, more as a tradies ute but with the ability to go off road and be able to tow and be built as an on road off road tourer and for carrying loads. The motor in the triton, like the pajeros is a pearler (just my opinion) great torque, good on fuel and comfortable. If your looking at wanting some thing to keep up with your mates in patrols or live axle cruisers with lifts then a triton is not for you. dont get me wrong they are very capable and especially with the optional rear diiff lock but not in the league of patrols or cruisers..............

Thanks for the reply: I take you point on the hang up at the rear ,I was looking at a patrol ute 1st but had a drive of the triton & was surpised how well they go . I could buy a new triton for the some sort of money as s/h patrol .its the front end set up, live v ifs making the big difference hmm !!! But with fuel economy & the weight of the triton is the thing !!! and its a work vehicle 80 % & play 20% . In regards to keeping up with the mates i have anther toy (v8 cruiser) but the cheese&kisses doz'nt like me stuffing with it .

Siringo, you will find the vehicle you are looking at will give you heaps of good service, plenty power, good fuel economy and very drivable.

None of the above comments relate to your vehicle in terms of "huge overhang" or "bending chassis" etc.

I have not heard of one Club Cab Triton that has any of there issues. There was a Dual Cab that had airbags highly inflated, long range tanks, two large spare wheels mounted at the rear of the tub AND towing a camper trailer at speed over the top of a sand dune!

A Mack truck proportionally overloaded like this would break it's back too.

When you add the 5 + 5 yr (= 10 yr on drivetrain) warranty Triton is still the best value for money around.

saw pictures of that vehicle and was madness. Any vehicle would break with the load where it was positioned.

I've got an 08 Dual Cab Triton. It tows my camper trailer and 1.6T boat no problems. Towed the CT from Brisbane to Kalumburu. No rattles or anything. Haven't had any problems with a bending chassis. I don't think this is unique to Tritons - have heard of Toyotas doing the same with modified suspensions and heavy loads. Vehicle drives well and has good fuel consumption. Agree with the value for money argument- couldn't bring myself to pay the premium for a lesser equipped Hilux.

Cheers Geoff

we have a large fleet of utes. Tritons lowest warranty claims, lowest cost on servicing. Mitsubishi fixed price servicing is a winner if travelling. Highest service cost Hilux followed by Colorado. Highest warranty claims Mazda and Navara.

When the diesels are serviced, make sure the valve clearances are done and the gaskets replaced every 30,000km's as per the service schedule. Many service depts. do not do them as it is involved and time consuming. However I have heard of many engine warranty claims being refused as Mitsubishi now want to see proof that this has been carried out before they will pay. I work in a Mitsubishi service dept.

HappyTravellers, So has this neglect to valve adjustment led to some sort of engine falure with the tritons?... Just asking out of curiosity.

I just searched NewTritonNet forum, the place that knows EVERYTHING about Tritons.

Guess what?

No mention of anyone being refused warranty for engine damage because of not having tappets adjusted.

I can't see how it could happen provided the 30,000 service was done by a dealer and that dealer recommended not doing the adjustment as the tappets were not noisy.

I guess getting that statement in writing would be worthwhile.

Cheers Neil

The warranty declines that I'm aware of have been to do with oil leaks developing from rocker cover gaskets and other seals in that area which would normally have been replaced when the valve clearances are done. Mitsubishi will not pay warranty on these seals if they have not been previously replaced at the recommended service intervals.

Never heard or seen of any valve issues on 3.2l or 2.5l. The Mitsubishi dealer we get our fleet serviced keeps us well up to date on any issues. If there is an issue with anything we want it attended to prior to anything happening.

so you pay $6k more for a SoftLoLux because you may get $1k more at trade in.
It is all relative.

I'm not looking at a Patrol or Cruiser type vehicle, I'm looking for an 80% work 20% play vehicle that I can take to Cape York, the Kimberleys, the outback, the Canning etc. I'm not looking at driving hard, just driving and seeing as much of Oz as I can.

Siringo, the triton will serve you well for what you have mentioned above and your intended uses. My neighbour across the road just bought a new one, he said at the moment its slightly thirstier then the terracan diesel he just traded but heaps more comfortable, silly buggar didnt know about the rear diff lock option so now is getting one fitted by ARB at nearly 3 times the price. Why mitsi didnt try and upsell him the optional lock suprises me, usually they try and sell you every option possible....................
