Doing a quick trip to Lake Eyre at
Easter. I am trying to find alternatives to the black top. The street GPS in the car showed a more direct way from
Yunta on the Barrier Highway in a generally NW direction to Wilpena and then on to
Marree.
Anyone got any ideas? Road conditions would also be useful.
And before you lot jump on me for making it such a "rushed" trip, when you work, as does my wife, days off are not free to have whenever you wish. So we take what we can until she retires.

FYI. The street GPS is not usually used for dirt nav. As a matter of fact this is the first time it has been run in months. The detail was scratchy and I know the maps are way out of date. So its unreliable.
Ozi shows tracks but its an unknown area to me and the road status cannot be found.
Hence my post.

No problem with the road from
Yunta to Wilpena and beyond. Good dirt road when last I travelled. You could google for current conditions

Thanks Guy
The status (from googling) shows it as 4WD. But I also need to know if its a 10KPH or an 80KHP 4WD road. Unfortunately we do not have a lot of time to spare enjoying a liesurely wander through the bush. Work commitments mean no time for extra days off. We need to decide before we leave
Canberra so its no good asking at the
Yunta pub when we get there. Its either via
Mildura or Broken Hill/
Menindee.
Mildura is shorter but if
Yunta is a good option then
Broken Hill may be the go.
Thanks

I drove
Nyngan to
Hawker in a day via the
Yunta turn off (Arkaroola Rd) last
Easter. It was dry then. I spent an hour in
Broken Hill shopping so the trip isn't that slow. Mike

Thats what we are counting on Mike.
We have to be back in
Canberra the evening of the day after leaving Parachilna. This is more of a fact finding detour to prepare for a more in depth trip later. But still making the most of it.
Thanks

Phil, the only thing is the road is dirt/gravel all the way and if its impassable then there are no alternatives. The blacktop is the safer but more boring option.
When I did it, I made sure the unknown was on the way there so if anything arose I had some time up my sleeve for back tracking. The trip
home was always going to be the quickest, safest route as time is my enemy as
well. Just my thoughts, have a great trip. Mike

Hi vk1dx
It sounds like you are travelling from the east, so if you take the
Yunta turnoff, there are two options, both very different and great alternatives to the blacktop.
Option one.
From
Yunta, head north and keep following the signposted signs to Arkaroola. Just out of town a little way, it is worth dropping in at the old
Waukaringa gold mines on your rights as you head north. After these keep heading north and when you get to Curnamona, take the road to your left signposted to Martins
Well. When you get to Martins
Well, take the main road to the south and it will bring you out on the main highway near
Rawnsley Park, then straight up to Wilpena.
Option two. - a very pretty drive
As per option one, but when you leave
Waukaringa, from memory about 6 or 7 kilometres up the road, turn left and follow the signs to Baratta. This will take you past the old
Windowarta Hut and before you get to Holowiliena, follow the sign post headed for
Hawker. Follow this track all the way through and it will bring you out on the main
Hawker - Wilpena Road, around 3 or 4 Kilometres north east of
Hawker.
From what I am hearing from locals up that way, they have never seen the country looking as good for over 30 years, it is just green and not the usual patched earth.
Have a great time in one of the top spots in SA.
Cheers
Stephen

Hi vk!dx,
Do you use OziExplorer at all? I have a plot file for Stephen's second recommendation which I could email you or put up here on the plot files section. It is a great route but would urge caution in wet weather.
As Stephen has said the country is looking un-naturally green at the moment.
all the best,
Mike

PS Sorry about the slow response. We have a passenger so I had to put the rear seats in. Also I thought it would be better with the carpet back in. It was out to
check for water ingress. Hell of a job. The carpet is in ONE piece.

I have only just
home from work and note there have been a few problems with you getting the Ozi Track File.
I have just sent it to you, so please let me know if you do not receive it. Here are a few images of what you can expect on option two.
Cheers

Phil, Stephens 2 options are quite different scenic drives as he said.
The road through Martins Wells is generally a good road and brings you out right opposite
the entrance to
Rawnsley Park.
This road is not as scenic as option 2 through Hollowilena, but is a bit better road and marginally quicker.
Option 2 is about 10 Kms north of the old
Waukaringa pub and an interesting drive through ever-changing scenery as you get closer to the Flinders. There were 2 gates along there last time I went along there and it could take at least 2 1/2 to 3 hours. It comes out 8 kms north of
Hawker on the Wilpena road.
You could either turn left and go back to
Hawker and up the main road to Parachilna, or go right and about 20 kms to the
Moralana Scenic Drive and that will take you along the southern side of the
Wilpena Pound.
If you decide to go through
Hawker, drop in to the
Mobil there and have a look at the seismograph there in the showroom.
I would be surprised if it didn't show some readings from the Japanese earthquake. It is there to monitor all the earth movements in the
Flinders ranges and it picks up lots of others as
well.

Hi Dave
I think that we will be taking the Option 2 drive. But it will be in the opposite direction. Mainly because we are committed to a schedule to meet a helicopter at
Marree for a flight over the lake. So it will have to be inreverse.
We may take your advice and fill up at
Hawker on the drive to
Marree. I should need a cuppa by about then.
Appreciate the timings as
well.

Hi Phil
Speaking of fuel, if you are Diesel, then make your last refuel is at the
Lyndhurst Hotel and it will be around 30 cents per litre cheaper that the fuel at
Marree, 80 kilometres away.
Cheers

It will be for diesel. We carry just under 300 litres in the tanks. I may even fill up at
Renmark where we are staying on the Friday night. That will give us enough to get back to
Renmark.
Best thing I ever did was put in the large tank.
Thanks

Phil,
We travelled from the Gammon to
Broken Hill, via
Yunta, during thrid term holidays last year. WE completed Grindels hut -
Broken Hill in one day fairly comfortably. The sourther section of the road were in exceptional condition, road crew were seen doing major works. We were travelling at 100kmh and cold have gone
foster if we wanted to. I think the road is the main transport access road for Beverly and as such is being maintained in vg condition.
The road across to
Leigh Creek is not in as good a nick but is still a good dirt road 80kmh+

Hi Paul
Between what you have given me and from the posts above I have a pretty good idea for a way through that area. It may have to be refined from track & road status that I can find between now and Friday week. I hate travelling at
Easter But . . .
We have a booking at the Prairie pub and have two days to get to
Canberra. We have done the
Broken Hill to
Canberra several times after trips to the top of WA.
The timing was especially helpful.
Excellent

There has been a lot of rain in those parts in recent months, which may have affected those dirt roads. You may find it faster to stick to more of the bitumen, at least on the way up there. i.e.
Mildura,
Burra,
Peterborough,
Hawker. When in the area, you could
check on the dirt road conditions for the return trip. We have towed an offroad van on the
Yunta-Arkaroola-
Copley roads, several times, with no iissues, but not after such an extended wet period. Have also towed Wilpena to the
Yunta road, via Martins
Well - no problems with that way either, but it was not all that
well signposted, and that section was a bit slower than the section on the
Yunta-Balanoona road.

Thanks Wendy.
The trip to Lake Eyre will actually be as you suggested. Its the retun trip where we may have time to do the
Yunta road detour. Missing sign posts is a common problem. Thanks for the info and we will rely on the local knowledge for the return trip.

Before you go traipsing off across little used tracks withing the Flinders Rangesd area have a look here
http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/quicklinks/northern_roads/northern.asp
There has been a lot of road damage in the Mid North of SA due to excessive rain for this time of the year so its best to make sure of your route before you head off.

Good advice and all to often, not taken. I usually have alternatives when I travel. Guided by local knowledge, of course. I also have that link in my favourites. But it doesn't hurt to ask does it. It is possible that the IT person was away from work for some reason and the site had not been updated. It happens.
It did here:
We learnt that years ago when stopped by a copper near
Brewarrina. We had driven from
Walgett in the old Kingswood when to road was closed due to heavy rain and lots of mud. The old Kingswood did
well. Slipping everywhere. I will admit it was fun but with hindsight we should have asked. No road signs to be seen.
Thanks (don't know your name)

I once drove the road from
Yunta north and connected somewhere around
Blinman in a Coaster school bus with a trailer of camping gear and about 16 kids. It was no problem. Great drive. The kids were all from Collingwood tech in
Melbourne and it was their first taste of the outback.
I would
check rain/water condition of the road however.

It doesn't hurt to ask for other ways through that area if new to there.
So far it looks good. Not a hard drive. But from the government site its 4WD only. So we will be fine.
