I understand we can now reach Birdsville from the South. Does anyone have up to date info on crossing the Simpson from East to West. Is the Eyre Creek bypass navigable and can we get out of Birdsville to Big Red?? The latest info I have is 4/4/11. Thanks

Eyre Creek will not be passable until July on present estimations. A heap of water has yet to come down.

I'd watch that South to Birdsville from Mungerannie rumor tells me river flooding out near blue ute.
Major flooding still in system from Marion Downs in the Eyre Creek and even though not major but still very much flooding the Diamintina is still coming down from the Diamantina Lakes it will be another 6 - 8weeks before the flood water passes past from up there and then it needs to dry.
I have had 2 fly overs up near Goyders and there is a lot of water.
Try ringing Birdsville info centre really informative as well.

Not sure where you got the idea you could get into Birdsville from the south - seeing as there is still water over the road into Birdsville. There is a rumour going around that the supply truck is coming up from Adelaide this week - we couldn't get into Birdsville from east last weekend and had to do enormous detour via Winton , east of Boulia, east of Bedourie, east of Lake Machattie (no fuel from Winto on) and into Birdsville from the north.
Came out vie east of Lake Machattie turn right along Bedourie to Windorah - , through the water at Monkira and on.
This weekend making attempt at going straight into Birdsville from the east, watching the levels in the Diamantina each day though - and not so heavily laden as last week.
As for Big Red - not a hope in heck. Not even using the local knowledge of overlanding on the dunes - that's why in a previous post yesterday or the day before I have said that my Easter camp will be in the dune behind the Tip - who cares, it's closer to the Desert than I am at the moment and I will still be able to see all the stars and if I'm bored sitting in the camp I can work out ways to catch the long-haired rats that are running rife in town. What a way to spend Easter - YES!
As I will be there with camera and computer (and now mobile phone of all things) I will put up some photos - too much water to be able to go fishing (hoping the yabbie hole is ok though) and give you first hand.
Don't stress about the Desert trips there is nothing wrong with going in and back out via the western side - there are still a number of tracks you can do without going back over. Just a matter of planning - having enough fuel - being open to anything that happens (including good experiences) - becuase Birdsville will always be there, Big Red will always be there and doesn't have to be experienced ONLY in a desert crossing (still think there are better ones in the Desert, especially down the eastern end of the Rig Road when it has been a blowy summer - they are GOOD.)
Have fun - let you all know.

Hi Ruth,

Well put, I love the way you think!

We just had two groups go out into the Desert, one with four vehicles & the other with eleven! So when they get back we will have a better idea of the conditions out there.

Ruth,
Do some research and you will see the BVT is open for 4x4's only.
Maybe SA Roads have it wrong but their site says this.

Hello All - well muffinman it is like this - when the supply truck is due (or very overdue) there are ways and means to get it into Birdsville or very near Birdsville and one of the ways is to get special permission and then to have graders on standby at very bad spots. Or to drive around via Innamincka as has been happening for sometime. Sometimes it gets as far as Pandie Pandie and then everyone boats down to pick up the food.
Hey Dunworkin' haven't had much time to talk recently but do need to tell you that dear old Sully (choc lab) passed away on the 3 March - just before his 13th birthday on 21st. We still have his twin, Tilda, and we are taking Sully's ashes to Birdsville (he lived there from when he was 7 weeks old) to put with Mr Kitty (and all the other favourite town animals) on a special sandune. Ian has a special pewter box (like a pill box) with some ashes in the ute so Sully never misses a trip.
John B2 - thanks for your nice comments.
Road from Windorah - Birdsville opened yesterday 14/4/2011.
Ozrover - talk to you soon!

Hi Ruth, Oh how sad, I feel for you. I had to get a tissue when I read your sad news, it also brought back memories of our girl. I'm so sorry for you both, it's good that you still have his twin and that he is still having his trips around with Ian.
I can't believe that Birdsville is still washed out, it must be one of the wettest and longest season you've had, is it not. Hope all OK for you. Cheers

Even if you can get to Birdsville you can't get across the Eyre creek, I am going in early June and plan a kind of double crossing, French line to Poeppel and Rig road back.

I was hoping to cross the Simpson from west to east in mid June, however that plans looks dead in the water!! So a circuit from Mt Dare along the French line to Peoppel back down Knolls ,WAA ,Erabena to Lone Gum,then Rigg Road back to the French Line, Dalhousie and back down to Oddnadatta- depending on rain of course!
Anyone got any idea on fuel needs for a circuit like that and what conditions we are likely to find? We will be in a 2010 Triton 2.4 diesel and had planned to take 60 litres extra for the original Simpson crossing, but I am a bit stumped about the consumption for this circuit. My feeling at present is to be cautious and carry 80 litres of fuel extra,(total of around 160).We will travel in a convoy of 4 vehicles 2 landcruisers, 1 hilux and 1 triton all diesels.
I was really looking forward to a beer at the Birdsville Pub, but I 'll have to wait for the next trip and have a couple extra at Mt Dare instead.
Cheers,
Campy

Well everyone - the weather is STUNNING! Clear no sign of rain, light southerly blowing, cool mornings, beautiful days and gloriously starry night with a waning full moon (now not so full). Plenty of tourists around, muddy vehicles, quite a few caravans.
You can get within two sand dunes of Big Red (that is travelling on the road), I'm going adventuring tomorrow to see what there is to see.
Yabbies are scarce - got enough big ones for a good feed in white curry sauce last night.
Diamantina is just under the bridge and flowing very quickly. Flying out was fantastic - over Wivenhoe and Somerset - then over the channels and the Cooper - everything so green, even the gibbers.
