Voxson (Adelaide)
I completed a pointless excercise the other day when the temperature was 28 degrees and my car with others was standing in the sun all day at work....
I grabbed the temperature gun from the cupboard which you simply point at an object and it gives the surface temperature in Celcius........
We had a whole range of car colours from my Arctic White all the way through to Black and here are the following temperatures from the roofs of these vehicles...
Arctic White(37), Hilux Off White(42), Light Green and Light Blue(49), Fire Engine Red(58), Black(69)...
So when people complain about they're new cars air conditioner not working as
well the last one, maybe theres more to it than meets the eye........

Can't argue with the logic Voxon. The facts would speak for them selves and I guess one point in favour of a roof rack and also better insulation under roofs.
Sounds very interesting indeed for it would radiate down.

Voxson,
Heat gains (into) the vehicle at 50 kph is minimal for black paint v white paint
The major heat gains are through infiltration (poor sealing), glass solar radiation, glass thermal gains, panel thermal gains and a few other factors.
Steel is a good (
well reletively so ) good conductor of heat but equally as good to give up its heat when you have wind speed ... this negates (
well almost) the thermal conductance initiated by the solar collection of the panel.
Sounds good does'nt it .....hahahaha
but dont take my word...get an engineer to do the calcs....to bloody hard for me!
its a bit different when stationary but when in a car your usually travelling Wow! am I cute

Good work so far buddy, next project is for a sample testing of internall temperatures with different interior trim colours, black -
grey - tan etc...
Then before and after testing on a window tint job.......
Submit your research paper and the findings shall be subjectively assessed...
What brand of infra-red gun do you use ??? and is it worth the coin ??
Cheers Brad.Life is short- but there's always time for a yarda.

Hey Voxson,
I guess it would be harder to do but if you could do a similar
test with the cars driving around it could be interesting. Keep the AC off and the windows up just tw be sure your testing the impact of colour.
Also how do interior colours compare?
Just interested, don't upset the boss on my account.

Actually,,, my first comment came from a trip away a few weeks ago to the
flinders ranges... We were on skytrek for several hours and then the next day we were on some slower tracks for several more hours and the temp outside on both of these days was 30ish..... Now we were crawling around on these tracks, stopping for videos and pictures etc etc..... My mate in his dark blue missing control (nissan patrol) was complaining about how his aircond might need regassing and it doesnt seems as cold as it used to be,,,,,,,,, but we were doing heaps of idling and you need wind blowing through your front radiator thingy for effective aircond but
mine was as cold as ice the whole time........ A couple of other cars were red and green and had similar complaints but not as bad as the blue one...
Now my point after all the raving on i have just done is this---------I agree with the comments on after a certain speed it may not matter so much about colour but what about when crawling through rough terrain which we often do hours at a time...
I find also that my fridge doesnt seem to work as hard as my mates blue patrol which we have in our cars and switched on at all times...
I will do further investigation on interiors with results to follow......... Same Bat Time..Same Bat Channel.........(KA-POW) (THUMP) (BLAM) (CRUNCH)........._____________________________________________

Don't forget that different materials and colours of materials give off the infrared at different amounts(emissivity) The only way to get an accurate reading of the temperature is with a contact type thermometer (or spray your
test area with matt black paint which then voids the type of
test anyway as the colour has changed
:-} ) You will see this effect if you want by heating two objects the same but one sprayed silver and the other black. Heat them to the same temperature in the oven when you take them out and point your IR thermometer at them you will definitely see a difference. There will be a reference to this and a chart for different materials with your IR thermometer and they usually have a button to adjust this.
It is true of course about different colours and their absorbtion of IR radiation but in the interest of science I feel I must share the foregoing with you. (who said wanker?)
But seriously happy experimenting.
Cheers Brimo
CQ coast and loving it
