Just did a quick consumption test running around town, to and from work 3 times at 18k round trip, the other 13.2k running to local shops, so did 67.2k all up, no aircon running, only mod is an alloy bullbar (toyota soverign bar) grantreck tyres at 40psi and both tanks full to the top,it used 8L of fuel, The way I worked it out was 8 (litres) divided it by 67.2 (klms) which equals the grand sum of 0.1190476, so round up to 12L per 100k   Would this be write ?? Maybe I need to do a few 100k round town and it will change but even if it was 14L per 100 it would still be way better then I was expecting. Going away for a week, freeway driving and some running around local townships so will get a cunsumption test when I get back home and refill if chockers again. Im running normal unleaded not E10 crap or the higher octan stuff.....Regards Steve

Hi Steve,

67.2K is way too low to work out average fuel consumption.Check your consumption after you have used a full tank to get a better idea but even then, it will only be reliable for that particular type or driving.

Cheers and have a great Easter,

Michael

Yeah Michael your right, was talking to some other people about it and they say to do a few 100k's then work it out, Also the way the fuel transfer and filling work on the 120 prado is totally different to the 2x 90 series prados I had Ah well wishfull thinking LOL Im expecting figures of around the 15L per 100 for this type of drivng. Have a great easter and safe driving........Regards Steve

How do you know you used 8 litres of fuel?

The tanks were chockers, (filled up till coming up around nozzle kept clicking it like I fill all our cars up) then ran around town doing the 67.2klms then refilled again once again clicking it till fuel was just below inlet. Regards Steve

Right. Sounds ok, but as the ground is always on a slope at service stations I'd be very carefull about using such low km for an average.

By the way, why did you refill only after 67km?

Hi Kimba,

You're on the right track there mate but as the others said it is best to average it out over many tank fulls. This gives a more accurate idea of how you are going.

But, as I said, you're on the right track.

Cheers, Bruce

Kimba,

If you have an iPhone, download an app. There are several. Point being that you spend 30 seconds after every fuel stop inputting the info (Lt and ODO) and track your consumption and costs across the life of the vehicle. More importantly, you can track the difference made by towing, adding a bull bar, roof rack, chip and so on. This way you are getting the facts rather than the emotions.

I think one of the most important things you need to know is how much fuel is in your tank when the little orange light comes on.

Cheers

Hi Steve,
I take it you traded the 90 1kz in on a 4l v6 120. Mate the boss use to have a lux with the 4l in it and the few times I used it the consumption wqas very good. Close to high tens if memory serves me correctly. Torquey motor but a bit reluctant to rev was my impressions. But thats the only 4l I have driven. Another mate had one that went like a scalded cat.
Must say I prefer the 120s to the 150s to drive.I would imagine a stiffer suspension would do wonders for the on road dymamics of any 120 though.
Hope you get a good run out of it. Did you trade the 90 or sell private.
Cheers Pete

Na mate sold it privately, was only offered 22k for trade in got 28 privately, paid 23400 when we bought it but with all the mods and cost of head replacement over all we lost $1500 so was extremly happy about that. Not often it goes that way, we were just lucky when we bought it that the person selling it in the trading post at the time was valuing it off red book but also as a petrol so she had no idea, wright place at the right time as they say, had the head not gone $3700 we would habe made $$ out of it..They were 2 doctors that owned it (husband and wife) Yeah the 120 goes like a scalded cat alright. Unbelievable how much get up and go they have, have given it a bit here and there especially when you get some young one come up the inside of you and think they are going to blow you into the weeds when they take off, shocks them when they have to pull back in behind you lol, mind you if I drove it like that on a regular basis my feul economy would go out the window. Wife loves driving it over the 90's we have had, except finds it harder to judge the front as bullbar is not as square as the steel arb bars we had on the 90's. Smooth quit etc, just have to get the minister of finance to approve all the add ons now lol..........Have a great easter.....Regards Steve

Is it the 4speed or 5 speed auto Steve.Best Sals auto nullarbor is 13/100, but it does have an ECB bbar. Still we have done 30k troublefree, my Jack now has 180000ks with the only problems being inlet manifold gasket and blocked egr valve.Still has orinigal brake pads so has not been driven in the city much.
Undecided to update mine or keep on driving it.
Have a good one Pete

Oh ! Steve

I cry when I see estimates like that - give yourself a reasonable chance by recording your petrol and mileage after filling the tank right up every time using a logbook.

Only after a few weeks will you see an accurate trend , and you have to know your odometer is right - unless your going into tunnels etc a lot, use your gps odometer.

Hi Robin, yeah the speedo is dead spot on with the gps. Yes I have had a few replys stating to do it over a period of a few tank fulls to get a more accurate Ltrs per 100k. I dont normally fill it right up unless going away as I dont see the point of lugging 180L (180kg) around town but for this purpose I will over the next few weeks. Have a great easter Robin, hope you have some more stories for when you get back if going away although you normally have them just running around your property lol. Regards Steve

Will try Steve - you have good one to.

Don't like to lug to much either - mines in 2 tanks so sometimes I just leave sub-tank empty.

On the bright side 180lt's is only about 135kg

Happy easter

Hi Steve, diesel is about .85 and petrol is around .73 (I think) to water (which is 1lt = 1kg) or was in the 80's when I worked for Shell in Tom Price, I had to sample the fuel and take temps, check the specific gravity and use charts to work out the volumes at 15deg which was an industry standard to calculate what you had because at different temps volumes varied. By the way my hdj79 last tank to and from work, about 25kms each way, 740.7Kms for 73.08Lts which in my language is 28.619 MPG. cant complain about that.
Cheers

Yeah joined that about a month ago, Hey your figures are pretty impressive for your cruiser, is it a 1hz standard/after market turbo, or the factory turbo motor ?? You would have to be pretty happy with your figures for such a large vehicle. Half of what a 4.5L petrol would be using..... Regards Steve

Yeah Steve, I am pretty happy with how she runs.
She a 1HD-T with 322000k's on the clock, so she's only just run in ;)
I run 42-44psi all round in a set of 604V Deulers, this also takes in towing our 87 modified Jayco camper, my work trailer and the horse float, haven't towed it much or late. And the camper hasn't been towed any more than a 100k's away from home of late. Got a trip to Silverton for the National Gathering, so that will really set what economy I get.
I have adjusted the boast compensator and adjusted the Load mix screw on the injector pump. I must get the injectors see to one day. When i had it in for it's Big Ends, the mechanic was happy with how it performed, and he is a 1HD-T nut.
I can have a heavy right foot at times, but as a whole I'm happy.
I borrowed a 95 4.5lt petrol before I bought this one, had it for a month. couldn't believe how much fuel it chewed through towing a horse float, I was warned off buying a petrol, Clad I bought this girl.
Give a few more tank fulls and see how you go.
Good luck with it all and happy travels.

Cheers.

Just drive for 100 klms, fill up, then calculate

Just drive for 160 klms = 100 miles fill up, then calculate

Your above figures are close enough, 12 lts @ 8kpltr = 96klms

13 lts @ 8kpltr = 104klms

So 12.5 lts @ 8kpltr = 100 klms or 12.5 ltrs per 100 klms
