Just wondering if anyone can recommend some camping spots between Geraldton and Derby going via Karijini? We have a Landcruiser towing a Kimberley Kamper so we have the ability to get off the main roads a bit. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We have the Camps 5 book but wondering if there is any camp spots out there that havent made it to the book....looking for some good fishing spots too.

What way will you go to Karijini ct110? Just for overnight stops, Main Roads have some good 24 hour rest areas set a bit away from the road eg Galena Bridge and Nerren Nerren, and on the Nanutarra to Tom Price Road; Beasley River. Mt Robinson Rest Area is a beauty and well away from the road, but it is Newman side of the Karijini turnoff on the Great Northern Highway. I can't help with the fishing - where ever we go they were biting yesterday. Will you take the inland route to Port Hedland after Karijini?

Hi Motherhen

Thanks for that, we will be heading out that way from Exmouth down the Nanutarra Road and exiting out the Great Northern Highway.

Do you have any recommendations for staying down the Ningaloo Yardie Creek Road?

The Ningaloo coastline is the best.Check with the Milyering Visitor Centre at the north of the park; pay there or at DEC office in Exmouth. It was all free years ago but DEC camping charges now apply. There are some wonderful spots. Search for Cape Range National Park: Cape Range NP
Ningaloo Station is another good option.

I agree that the Ningaloo coastline is great...but....it can also be a pain in the peak season. My last trip there I couldn't get a spot during the 5 days I had in the Exmouth areas despite lining up every morning from around 6am. So a few day trips and camping at the Big 4 in Exmouth was the go for us.,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,unfortunately!

We should be up there in the next two weeks. We are experiencing the Easter and school holiday period at the moment and have only fluked a camp site at Geraldton and Kalbarrie due to cancellations.

We hit the west coast from the Great Central Road and completely forgot it was holiday time!! It was funny pulling into Sunset Caravan Park covered in Red Dust and everyone else was so squeaky clean!

We are hoping that the crowds will subside by the time we get up to Ningaloo Coast. Do you think this will be the case? Or is it always busy this time of year?

Hi ct

We get strange looks when we come into town too. When we got to Alice Springs having met rain on the Gary Junction Road, people were saying "You've got to wash that caravan - we keep walking into it".

Where ever you go, you will meet school holidays at some time, or come into a town to find it packed out due to a show or special event you have no interest in.

Others may have better knowledge of current trends, but it think the 'migratory birds' head north during May to peak in June/July, so you may be lucky and find a place. If not, if it is still open, we stayed at the caravan park on the tip of the point near Exmouth by the lighthouse - nice environment and away from town. That was about 15 years ago.

If you are coming up through Coral Bay there is a track north that will take you across Yardie Creek. The last time we were there there was free camping along a lot of the track. Lefroy Bay is especially beautiful and the fishing should be good If the conditions are right you can cross Yardie Creek but you will need to check ahead. DEC might be the best bet. And then there are plenty of National Park camp grounds before you hit Exmouth.
There is a good book:Free Camping in the North of WA. $20 at most camping shops. We used it a lot.
Enjoy you trip.

When you leave Karijini, go a bit north to Auski Roadhouse and turn left. This will take you to Roebourne via Millstream and old Wittenoom, gorges etc. A great sidetrip.
