These days it varies every year depending on prevailing wind conditions. Generally speaking it is more difficult east to west, how much depends on too many factors to describe here. The main point is to lower your tyre pressures and if you are still having trouble, lower them a bit more.
Big red is easy east to west , difficult west to east - just to confuse you.

I have completed east to west and I think it is easier due to the eastern approaches to the dunes being steeper but not as chopped up as the western side of the dunes. If approaching from the west the dunes are normally heavily chopped up and if speed or momentum is required it will make for a not so comfortable ride.
Where as you can take a real slow approach to departing the dune if going east to west.

We were supposed to do east to west last year but due to bad weather scouted around the south to Mt Dare then did it west to east. The reason they say it is harder east to west is because 95% of dunes travel up then kick to the right to travel parallel to the dune then go left to go over the dune which loses all vehicle momentum. Over the dune though is straight down. Get the tyre pressures OK and then no problems.
